Winter Tires/Wheels for X5

I have an X5 4.8i with Sport Package and 20" wheels. Does anyone know what wheels/tire combo will make the car safest for winter driving (snow/ice)?

1. Smaller is better. So if you can find some used 19" wheels (not sure if 18s fit your model) go for it. The wider the tire, the worse it is for winter driving.
2. Performance snow tires are designed to give good performance in the dry and decent performance in the snow. Remember, you are normally driving on cleared roads and snow is the exception. So a true snow tire is actually really bad in the dry but great in the snow.
3. I had great luck with the Dunlop M3s (back when I had my 550) but if I had to get a winter tire today, I would go with the Nokian WRG2 if it were available in the size I needed.
4. I don't like the Tirerack combos. You have a really nice vehicle and to have to look at crappy generic wheels 6 months out of the year is just a shame. So find some OEM BMW wheels that someone is selling and get the winter tires that are best for your area/driving.

edit - I see you are in Colorado. Depending on where in Colorado (i.e. if you are in snow every day, then go with true snow tires, otherwise performance winter is best).
