I think it just is going to be a more aerodynamic X5. Let's say: 4-door coupe like. (and I know coupes shouldn't be 4-doors....)

someone should inform BMW of the reports on increased global warming. What is the need for yet another large SUV?

according to my info it should compete with the R-Class from Mercedes. Compared with the X5, the X6 looks a lot lower than the X5, so it's meant to be a crossovermodel with stylingfeatures from a SUV and a coupe:

I would much prefer the X6 over the R-Class. The R-Class is basically a tarted up Chrysler Pacifica with ugly front and rear lights.

Mercedes hit the mark with the vehicle shape and overall design, but missed it by too many things for me to even consider it.

I would prefer the standard 3-seat bench in the rear with no 3rd row and a price tag that families can afford.

I think you are confusing the x6 with the Raum Funktionales Fahrzeug. The X6 is designed to compete with the Range Rover Sport. It will be a four/five seater with less room than the X5 but build off the same chassis and components - it is designed to be sportier, will look sportier and be lower to the ground, and more expensive than the X5.

The MB R class competitor (RFF) has not yet been greenlighted by the supervisory board, even though it is in advanced stages of planning. The tepid market reaction to the R class are apparently making BMW cautious about approving it.

...well then I have a luxury battleship for sale. Comes fully loaded! Sheesh. Making money is one thing, but it's still depressing. Now that the average joe is moving away from SUVs because of gas prices, the affluent are moving back towards them? Ugh, get a house, forget the gas guzzlers. Don't get me wrong, I'm not quite enough of a tree hugger to say everyone should drive a Prius, but big luxo SUVs are just dumb, especially for a driver centric company such as BMW. Sorry, but I just cant see how that thing could be a driving machine at all.

Perhaps you don't know: The R-Class is already on the road...

They planned to build a MPV or Raum Funktionales Fahrzeug as you called it. But it's not in line with the BMW-thinking of building cars. BMW-cars should've always a sporty flavour, a MPV doesn't have that. Maybe a sort of coupe-style MPV, with the size: between the touring and normal MPV, in the future, I don't know.

You're right that in competition it perhaps comes closer to the Range Rover Sport, but as you can in the pictures: it is lower but not shorter. So the shape of the car is more in line with the Merc R-Class.

A pic of the R-Class, its shape does look like the spied X6:

Coupe-styled (low), SUV-styled (big wheels, chunky bumpers), MPV-styled (lot's of room, but in a BMW this is always relative)

The R63 AMG is pretty sporty I would say, so BMW could make it as sporty as it wants to.

I think that we will see this model in a few years time. They won't lose money if they use many of the same parts that are used on other models, just like MB has done with the R.

V5: I like it, but hopefully it is only a 5 seater and has X-Drive.

i don't know about this. do they really need another class in their SAV category? i think not. it's a little overkill, in my opinion, but you never know.
