X5 E70 wheel diameter max variation, Staggered 22"

Hey all,

First time poster here with a question regarding the maximum diameter variation between the front and rear wheels on my 2012 E70 X5 x35i

Ive done a fair bit of research here but havent found anything definitive on what the limits are. My concern is with the Gearbox/transmission.

Ive purchased a set of 22in wheels, 22x10.5 Front, 22x12 Rear and am now searching for the best tire combo.

Stock my X5 had 275/40-20 Front, 315/35-20 Rear which gives a Diameter Variance of 0.07% (728mm x 728.5mm), basically identical.

The common set up I see on a 22in wheel is either:
295/30-22 Front, 335/25-22 Rear = Diameter Variance: 1.29%
(735.80mm x 726.30mm)

or 285/30-22 Front, 335/25-22 Rear = Diameter Variance: 0.48%
(729.80mm x 726.30mm)

My preference is to go with the wider front tire (295/30-22) to avoid excessive stretch (not interested in the stretched look) on my 22x10.5 front rim.

What level of diameter variance is acceptable? Ive heard anything from "no more than 1%" to "anything under 3%". Ive seen a lot of 22" set-ups similiar to the one I've planned... anyone ever hear of issues? Thanks!!

Man I did a lot of searching and at one point I knew off the top of my head...but it has been awhile. I think 3% is max but in the owners manual I thought it even talks about new vs worn tires front to back is a no-no

Obviously less difference will be better, 285 on a 10.5" will not look stretched its right on for fitment IMO.

Hey, I really appreciate your input! Yeah, after a long search ive come to my own conclusion, those wheel diameters need to be as close to the same as possible. Ive never seen a figure over 3% max, so my Variation front to back of .48% should be well within acceptable range.

I did end up going with the slightly narrower tire (285).

Im really surprised this topic isn't talked about more...then again I may be looking in the wrong area.

Again, thanks for the reply

I see a lot of guys running 295/30-22 Front, 335/25-22 Rear, and I have just ordered the same combo myself.

hoping you guys can help

Hi there, im a first time poster here too so please accept my apologies if im crashing your post!

I have bought a set of AXE EX30's (9x22 front ET20/10.5x22 ET25 rear) in 22's but i think the tyres on them are wrong in terms of overall variation. I havent a clue what how to calculate them so if you could help that would be great!

They have on:
Front 285 30 22 & Rear 315 30 22 but im thinking this rear should be 335/25?

Am i right in my thinking here? Also with this kind of offset ET20 front/ET25 rear does this work ok without any spacers? im not wanting an aggressive look and want to keep them within the arches on my Msport model X5

Less is better. No more than 1% for me.

The less difference in diameter between the front and rear axles, the better. No more than 1% difference.
