Dash Cams

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone here have a dash cam installed on their x5, if so how was the install (concealing the wires etc). If anyone could post their review on their experiences it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Kev.

I have a Blackvue cam hardwired to sunroof wiring. It's permanently powered, so allows recording in parking mode. One drawback - 'battery discharge...' message after few hours and a risk of eventually draining the battery. Can be mitigated with Power Magic.

You'll get much more info on specific forums like http://forum.dashcamtalk.com/

I am interested as well. Especially after that whole debacle in NY with the Range Rover guy vs. the biker scum. Not interested in all the fancy new features like WiFi and GPS, just want a good dash cam.

that and recently i've heard some horrible insurance stories from my friends that i think dash cams will be a good investment.

Smyles: thanks for the info.
Do you have DR400 or 500? Does it understand when you start driving?
Where did you mount it? I wanted to mount a cam the way it does not obstruct the view.

I see that some dash cams only record the events, not continuously. In your opinion, if you want a dash can that has good video and audio quality that records when you starts driving and stops recording when the vehicle is parked, what do you recommend?

400 ver II.
In my case it switches from parking mode once you start driving (not sure how it's triggered. "Excessive" motion? GPS?).
It's mounted next to rain sensor, driver side. You can't put it too close to the sensor as it will get in the wide view.

Strictly imho: look at Korean units with form factor similar to BlackVue, the smaller the better, with permanent mounting option. They may not be as advanced (=claimed megapixels/HD/features/etc) as Chinese, but in general are better built and much more reliable. And I'd budget at least $200 for a unit; anything cheaper most likely is junk.

I have a GoPro mounted on my windshield. I asked about in car dvrs awhile back because of situations just like NY. The roads I drive on people don't car and crap, mufflers and more fall out of vehicles. I really wanted to find one that records 360 on car. Day 1 owning my X5 I would have loved to have one. Had someone put two door dings, front door and back door, the first time parking at work.

just installed a blackvue on my car ( all this crap with the bikers and people/kids walking at green at lights and several personal incidents where idiot drivers almost backing up into me), bought a female cig adapter outlet, hard wired to same spot i wired my escort detector (do a search for the cig adapter wiring). had to remove the passenger side paneling to reach the wire. plugged the adapter to the outlet and tucked the wires in the paneling. tucked wires in headliner all the way to the top near the mirror.

Do you mind sharing some pics and some footage of the dash cam video quality?

the videos you see online for that particular camera is the pretty much the quality. I lost my sandisk adapter so i cant upload right now. but pretty much what you see on youtube ( in HD) is the same quality.

These seems good http://www.szswill.com/car-camera.html
Do you happen to find some videos in your car with a lot of sun involved? Like summer or something. I quite like this camera and I think I'll just buy it because I got rammed from BMW scammer who wants to make it look like my fault. I start feeling like I live in Russia.

I have the new garmin 20 dash cam 250.00- has GPS location and crash detection and auto records as needed but never copies over ' events' I bought garmin adapters to perm mount on windshield.. hate the suction cup stuff. now for the power-- I hate wires and esp hate 12v plugs. The garmin has a 1 hour battery and I added a slim hyper juice battery which is slim and fits on visor. (the garmin comes with a short USB cable. so total record time should be 4+hours (I'm not in my car that long)-- or if you grab a longer USB cable for a few pennies you could route it to the existing USB plugs the new BMW's have now.. I take my car to dealership for maintenance and didn't want to mess with hard wiring 12v.. (I move from X5 to 3 series so I liked my battery idea) I can post pictures if anyone wants to see.
