Electronic Oil Sensor Malfunction?
This past week I noticed an "oil above maximum level" indication in my "Vehicle Info", accompanied by a yellow engine. There was no active notification, which I found odd, but I had it checked out at the shop that changed my oil about two months ago.
They drained a quart, allowed the in car sensor to register the change, but no change occurred. They then drained and measured the all of the oil, twice, both times to find it was the proper amount. Hypothesis: faulty sensor. They changed the sensor, allowed it time to reset....it's still reading over the maximum amount. They didn't charge me for the new sensor yet, as I'm evaluating to see if it registers anything different over the next week. Has anyone else experienced similar troubles? I'm disliking BMWs decision to forego a malfunction-proof dip stick now that I'm out of warranty at 60K miles.....it's exactly 4 years old at the end of this month. 2011 X5 35d Welcome all input or other possible causes...... |

Sorry I don't have imput but somehow the previous owner reset my service intervals too many times so I can't read oil levels at all....it's pretty handy way handier than a $5.00 dipstick .

Can you post a picture, I haven't spent much time under the hood of our diesel but I don't recall a dipstick...even text me a pic if you still have my number.

UPDATE: Replaced electronic sensor and updated all software to latest revs, no change - still shows too much oil. So, no cause found, but thanks for pointing out the d's do still have dipsticks - big $$ saver in troubleshooting. I'm going to stick with that approach until someone else gets a lead on what the problem may be.
