20" Tires for X5 Diesel

Hi All,

I live in Denver and I have the 20" wheel option on my 2011 X5 Diesel. I've finally burned through the factory tires and I'm ready for something different.

I'm considering 2 general options - 1 being some sort of run flat again, and the other being non - run flats.

What are the best run flats to get that are all season for the 20" setup? I have snow wheels and tires, but in Denver our weather changes so quickly sometimes there isn't time to swap to the winter set.

I'm in real estate so I do spend quite a bit of time on construction sites so I have had my fair share of nails.

Any recommendations are much appreciated!

It would help to know what factory tires it came with.

I'm also in Denver and have been running Continental DWSs in 20in OE sizes for about a year, and have been very happy.

Pretty stable on the dry, and can cut through as much snow as I can find.

The Continental DWS and the Nitto Mottivo's are by far the most popular tires for the 20" wheels, assuming the size you want. Price wise pretty close, a bit over 1000 or so for either. But neither are run-flats.

just go to www.tirerack.com and pick from there, or discounttire.com Most folks do not opt to keep the run-flats, but in your case it make sense. If your car is leased, you may have to keep runflats..

I was thinking about going with the Contis DWS. Just trying to decide if I want to stick with run flats or not ugh...

I have the stock 20" setup - 275/40s and 315/35s

What is the best run flat to go with if I do stick with a run flat?

I own the car, so I don't have to worry about a lease return.

After switching to the Conti DWS, I'll buy the spare tire kit and stay away from the run flats. Maybe a can of fix a flat or a plug kit with a small compressor. Either way I do prefer the non run flats over what is available for the run flats.

I also have a set of winter tires I run. The all season are okay but I do prefer having snow tires in the winter. We don't get a lot of snow in Indiana but when we do it gets messy. Not much road clearing equipment and a lot of roads to clear. We went two weeks without getting our street cleared after getting 9 inches of snow and ice.

do you drive the X5 year round? Since you're in Denver, I would recommend 2 sets of tires:

1. summer
2. dedicated snow tires

If you want to go with only one set, your only option is all-seasons, which are DWS, Motivos, Pirelli Winter Carving Edge (Winter Run Flats)

Simply put, just not a lot of options out there for OEM 20 sizing.

I suggest all season run flat Bridgestone Dueler HP. I have the 20's staggered set up and they work fine.

I do have snow tires/rims. All seasons would just be good for that early season and late season snow I figure.

Decided to pull the trigger and go with the Conti DWS. Should be installed in a week. I'm also going to order this - http://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/342/BMW-MOBILITY-KIT

Hopefully this should be a good setup.

The HP Dueler's weren't terribly confidence-inspiring, but were able to get through a January snow and the last couple of storms without issue (I had the winter tires from roughly 2/1 to 4/1). I would be fine running them through the late/early snow as long as there wasn't big accumulations.

I can speak for myself, driving on Toyo Proxes II ... they have the best hydroplaning rating but def not for snow, also, you can go one size up, 285/ 40 and 325/35 ... don't buy RFTs PLEASE
