Finally found a 2012 X5 with MSport and bunch of other options

Hey guys, After almost 5-6 months of search I finally found an X5 that has all the options I was looking for.
Its a 2012 X5 3.5i, Alpine White exterior and Tobacco interior for $40,740 before taxes and title.
It had 40k miles and CPO until 2018
Options:
Convenience Package
MSport Package
Technology Package
Cold weather Package
Adaptive Drive
Active Steering
Premium sound Pacakge
Extended Leather - Nappa Leather Dashboard and Center console
Soft Close Doors
Multi-contour Seats
Useless BMW apps

I bought it in Cali at (BMW Encinitas) and then drove it back to Chicago right after. It was a long trip. Since I wanted to see the car in person, I decided on driving it back instead of shipping it. Oh the tires are brand new as well.
The only thing it doesnt have is the heated steering wheel and I NEED that. That was the main reason I wanted cold weather package. Any suggestion on how can I replace the existing steering wheel with heated one? I know in 2013 the MSport had heated steering wheels.
But let me know what you guys think of the price and options and what are some good reasonable mods ?

Congratulations on your purchase. It reminds me of my current X5M, with the painted fender flares. I am not certain but you may should be able to swap the steering wheel along with the control panel which houses the switch that controls the on/off of the heated steering wheel. Unfortunately I don't think you can just add the heated steering wheel without changing out the entire wheel as the heating element is sewn into the steering wheel. Great buy though.

It does which makes me wonder why you don't have a heated wheel. Are you sure it has that package? run the vin in the decoder to make sure!

The heated steering wheel is part of the cold weather package, but for whatever reason, just not on 2011 & 2012 M Sports...not sure why.

As OP indicated, BMW finally added it to 2013 M Sports with CWP.

I've been to BMW Encinitas, did you check out all the M cars they have on their lot? I think it was the country's largest M dealer by sales

The m-sport with CWP did not come with the heated steering wheel in 2011 and 2012. This is the reason the wife did not get the m-sport package(and she wanted 336's). I have read people have retrofitted them.

Yeah I am thinking of buying a 2013 MSport heated steering wheel and then swapping it with mine. and then I wil just sell mine. I want to make sure though that there is wiring already in place to connect the heating element. I am guessing since it has cold weather package it probably does.

you are right, i dont think I have seen so many M cars at one dealership. There were i8s and too many i3s as well. but i was disappointed that some of the sales people didn't know much about the M cars.

I am not too big into Mods. A few things I have to take care of before hte warranty ends are
- Replace Start/Stop button - Cant believe its already fading with 40k miles.
- Trim around the cup holder and iDrive is deteriorating
- Need to get rid of the front license plate and install removable plate holder under the front bumper
- Window Tints

I will look into other mods in a few months. What do you recommend ?

One strange thing happened this weekend. I would like you guys to chime in. This is my first BMW with comfort access. So I parked the car in the garage and press the Start/Stop button once and didnt lock the car. I thought after a while the electronics will turn off by itself.
The next day when I go to start the car, the battery is completely dead. I had to jump start it. Has this happened to anyone else ? Do I need to press the start button twice to completely turn everything off before I exit the car ?

two months ago when I was there, they had 5 M cars with Frozen paint, and a Alpina B6. I was awed, it was like going to a cars and coffee event...lol

You push the Start/Stop twice to turn off the car, but you're overthinking it...the manual and sales guy would say, push the Start/Stop button twice to turn off the car. But that's too much work. Simply exit the car and lock it up via Comfort Access or Remote, and all electronics shuts off. Simple as that.

If you push the Start/Stop once, the car goes into standby mode, but electronics are still on and will remain on until a certain amount of time and it'll auto shut off. To preserve your battery, simply lock the car to shut everything off, I do this while even pumping gas.

Since you're in Chicago and get decent amount of snow, are you planning on getting winter wheels or switching to all seasons?
You should have seen your last snow for the winter so that leave you plenty of time til next winter to decide.

I live in the Chicagoland area and I run dedicated Winter/Summer sets on both the M3 and X5. Personally I am 100% behind winter/summer compared to all seasons. There are tons of data to support the superior performance characteristics of winter tires compared to All seasons. Yes all seasons are a very viable option but not the best. To me the most important part of Winters compared to All seasons is the stopping/handling/maneuvering of the car in cold/wet/snow/icy conditions. This is the real benefit which winter tires are superior.

• I have not had any snow depth which I could not easily drive through.
• Stopping at a much shorter distances.
• Switching lanes in snow covered road is solid and predictable. Snow rutted road does not produce squirrely or sliding lane changes.
• Turning is much better and predictable in snow. You will slide less in turns when snow and slush is preasent.
• panic stops in cold/wet/black ice is like on dry/warm conditions.

The one thing which is front and center for me for making this decision for the last 15 years. If winter tires prevents me from 1 accident(which it has many many of times), it saves me from a wrecked car, diminished car value and preventing the accident for the safety of myself and family. It is not hard to justify 1500-2000 and the hassle of swapping setups when your driving a $70K+ car around.

There are +/- to running dual setups and it is up each individual to consider these +/- to make a decision.

Some of the benefits:

• Better tire for conditions.
• ideal rim sizes for tire
• Save your summer rims from winter conditions(less washing/road salt/brake dust.
• overall cost is negligible. you only use 1 set 1/2 the year so one can get very long life cycles over both setups.
• You can always sell your winter setup to recoup costs.

Some of the Negatives:

• You have to swap rims twice a year.
• You have to store 1 set of wheels
• You have to purchase extra sensors/rims just for winter.
• Most of the Winter setups are 255/18's or 255/19's. If you have 275/315's the winter setup looks tiny or odd.

I think you got a decent deal. I just picked up a 2013 X5 3.5i M-Sport with cold weather package (heated steering wheel) for $43k. It is also CPO till 12/18 and has 40k miles. Enjoy!

Congrats man. Does yours have the same or similar options as I got ? Especially the adaptive drive and tech package ?

Congrats on the X5! I think the price is very fair, especially since most of us are willing to pay a bit of a premium to get an X5 M Sport with all the good options on it. The CPO warranty is a "must" in my book. I like buying cars with 10K left of factory warranty since they'll cover everything out of pocket for quite some time, before you go into CPO territory.
