First snow experience in Chicago

hey guys, topic might be a beaten up horse but I wanted to share my disappointment... I got blizzaks LM-22s on 209s (stock 18") non-staggered and the truck was not really doing well ... i experienced slipping when tried to move from a stop .. the tires have 9/32s on them .. maybe its the diesel torque ? I wasn't gunning or anything... did I put wrong blizzaks ??

I'm not going to suggest you put the wrong Blizzaks on, but when I had 209s I used Blizzak LM60s (I think?) and they were the BMW runflat version. They were pretty good in deep snow but not great on ice or packed surfaces.

My opinion (and I'm sure others will offer their's also) is that Chicago doesn't typically get so much snow that you are driving in deep snow very often. Usually it's plowed pretty well and you deal with icy and snow packed roads. Maybe I'm wrong? Anyway, I find the Pirelli or other tires that are rated for more of that type of winter driving better. And I think they last a little longer.

Your diesel's torque shouldn't be the reason the tires didn't meet your expectations. It might take a while to find what you like. I've been through 3 different sets before I found what I like.

Like I said, it depends a lot on what feels best to you and what your conditions are. I'm using Pirelli Ice and Snow. Runflats no less. Stock 275/40/20 and 315/35/20. I have little to no slip accelerating or braking unless I try to slide them, which is fun too!

The Pirelli Winters are getting really good ratings also, I think it was designed for the Cayenne.

I used continental DWS staggered on my 20s last winter in upstate New York. Had many snow storms and my car handled like a champ. That's my recommendation!

I've got Pirelli Scorpions on mine. This is my first winter season with them in Chicago. If the snow pack was softer (unlike now, which is virtually ice) and traction was still marginal, I'd consider taking 4-5 lbs. of air out of the tires, since you can't go fast anyway.
