BMW X8 Flagship SAV Under Consideration

BMW may not be stopping at the X7 in expanding the upper range of its SUV/SAV portfolio. Klaus Frohlich, head of BMW development, has confirmed to Autocar that a new X8 model is under consideration.

As indicated by its name, the X8 would sit at the very top of BMW's SAV lineup and take on the likes of the upcoming Audi Q8.

"The sector is growing fast, so there will be opportunity," said Frohlich. "It is early to talk about X8, but one of the first decisions I made when I worked on product strategy was to take the X5 and make the X6." He added: "There is room for X8 - especially in markets like China - but there are no decisions yet."

As with BMW's evenly number X models, the X8 would feature a coupe-like roofline. But, it may not simply be a re-skinned version of the X7. Instead, it may need to be a long wheelbase version of the X7 to free up additional rear space and allow for a sloping roofline. This may require the X8 to be built on a hybrid mix of BMW’s CLAR modular platform, which underpins the firm’s other X models, and the Cullinan’s new aluminium structure in order to achieve rigidity without adding too much weight or cost.

Don’t put that face on it, if they actually want it to sell.

That'll be huge! The X6 looks big, the GLE looks bigger! Oh well, I'm not that market anyway!

I don't know... X7 is already enormous!
Imagine the slogan: "The all new BMW X8, the most dynamic Bus ever! (At least its weight as much as)"

That's where they take the Z4 and turn it into a two seater SUV.

If they offered a 340i wagon in RWD getting that unicorn would be worth it. Only AWD and 4 banger loses its appeal to me

you know, as much as I disliked some of those styling cues on the X7 concept, I think they look good in this X8 rendering. That brash, in your face styling just fits this model. I don't know how well the X7 will sell if it looks like this, but they'd sure sell X8's if they looked like that rendering.
