2012 - Rattling from hatch area

I have this annoying rattling from hatch area that I can't seem to find. I even went as far as folding the rear seats and getting into the back while my wife was driving, trying to detect where the rattling is coming from - and I can't find it for the life of me. I took it to the dealership and they said it was coming from headliner cassette and installed felt tape - but that didn't change a thing.

Is this a common problem? Did any of you guys have it and solved it?

Open the lower tailgate and close. On the side which is rattling push harder on that corner to get the lock to fully latch. I don't think any amount of latch adjustment can fix it, you just have to bump the lower hatch fully closed.

LOL I did the same thing last week. I remember reading a thread a while ago about the rear latch needs to be tightened as it can cause a rattling sound

Adjust the hook on the lower tailgate piece. Repeat in a year or so.

Have the same issue, not sure if it's from the lift gate or the lower hatch. However I came across this on another post. I have yet to try this out but will do it soon.

I tried this but it still didn't solve my rattling problem. I've wrapped electrical tape on all of the latches, made bump stop adjustments, and even added silicone grease to any metal on metal piece...

I think I found the source of rattling on mine. The catch for the rear tail gate is rattling. I recorded a short video (sorry, somehow it ended up being a vertical video) - and when I pull on the latch there's maybe 1-2mm of movement, and it makes noise.

I think I'm going to bring it to BMW and let them deal with this BS since the car is still on warranty.

The catch has a play by design, because it slides to allow that 'tightening' when you close tailgate, and for whatever reason BMW couldn't come up with a mechanism where a plate could slide w/o being loose. Check any X5. Hence my recommendation to adjust it.

Is there a guide on how that hook should be adjusted?

I fixed the noise. Here's what I did - I took the plastic panels off on the lower gate, removed soft close mechanism assembly, took off the hook and metal cover over it and packed it out with heavy polyurea grease. Put everything back together, test drove it, and no more noise.

If it happens agian, I will use Daizen grease. I didn't have any handy this time, but its the thickest, long lasting grease I ever seen.

Put black electrical tape on the u shaped latch, in the middle of it. 2 times around is good enough. I did that to the hatch and the two folding rear seats. And it works like golden, no more rattling.

You can wrap them with electrical tape, apply felt tape, but I recommend to apply some thick, tacky grease to the metal hooks.

This thread is gold - we also have a rattle in ours and it sounds like it's intermittently coming from both sides, so tomorrow I'm going to adjust those bump stops and see if that fixes it. Will report back!

I had a squeak that was obviously coming from the tailgate. While in BMW dealer for something else I mentioned it and they adjusted the bumpstops, all good!
