Pulsating Acceleration

Hi All
I posted earlier that I was experiencing pulsating acceleration in my 2011 X5 50i between 60 and 90 mph. Most noticeably at high altitude (around 7-8K feet) and pulling up a hill. I can actually see the tach pulsate very slightly. I recently had the rig at sea level, and I experienced no pulsating at all. Back in the high country now, and I am back to pulsating. All I could get from my SA was "try lower octane fuel at altitude". Hmmm. I am thinking things such as O2 Sensor, vacuum leak, spark plugs, and the like, but wouldn't I have been affected at sea level? Any thoughts at all?
Many thanks.

I believe the idea is that higher octane at altitude ignites too early? I am a bit baffled by this, and could be completely wrong about this idea.
