2008 X5 4.8i buying advice

in the market for a used 2008 X5/4.8i. Any good or bad experience with this year/model is greatly appreciated, particularly the reliability of the engine and transmission. I thought a 4.8L V8 should be awesome to drive, but somewhere I read 4.8L V8 motor is not that great and poor gas mpg. Is that true? I am wondering what is an average life of the motor before it might start giving problem, assuming oil changes and other routine maintenance are done on time

use case will be for weekend short family trips (150ish miles rt) and occasional long trips (600 + miles)

Had a couple 08 X's, just sold one last month. What is a poor gas mpg to you? should not considering 4.8i if concern about mpg. No one has a crystal ball to know the average life of the motor or the transmission. You should have an extended warranty if you buy one, not because the motor will breaks down on you.

Just bought my 07 couple of months ago, minor repairs all DIY, save $ if you area DIY guy....just be prepare for expensive compare to japanese or dosmestic repair at the workshop. I know what I am getting into when I bought mine. It's a fantastic ultimate driving machine. Good luck. Btw yes the gas mileage is pretty bad on a 4.8 for sure.

I haven't taken my cars to the mechanic for years. handle all the repairs myself, although I might need bigger engine lift if i have to pull the V8 along with tranny out
Concern is these newer SUVs are heavy on high tech. read stories about it stalling while you are on the freeway etc. mpg is not a concern while getting a V8 , but expect it to perform very well though. How many miles on your X5 when you bought it? I am thinking of getting something with 100K+ as those will be around 20K and the motor etc through its mid life?

The '08 V8 was notorious for being one of the least reliable models of the E70.

False. I think you're thinking of the '07 -- but there are plenty of good '07s too.

People like to say the LCI models are the ones to buy (if you can afford them).

No, just from multiple posts on different forums over the years, I know that a number of people have recommended avoiding the 2007 model (the first year of the E70). I have also seen others that have not had any abnormal issues with their 2007 model.
