X6 3.5 fuel pressure pump problems

Just wanted to know if anyone has been having this problem. "this is teh third time we drop the car back at the dealer for a faulty fuel pressure pump. I am ready to take other action against BMW. It is nota good thing to be paying a premium for a car that is sitting at the dealer every 2000 miles for faulty same problem.

I detest this car and detest bmw.

N54 engines (335, 535, X6 3.5, 135) all have the N54.

BMW has extended the HPFP emissions warranty for 07 and 08 335/535's to 10 year 120 miles.

So yeah, the pumps have been an issue.

California lemon law states
1. Any car that has been in the repair shop for more than 30 days is entitled to buy back under lemon law
2. Any car that is in for the same repair 3 or more times during the warranty period is entitled to buy back under lemon law.

Personally, I would tell the dealer and BMWNA that you want the car bought back by BMWNA. A courtesy buyback avoids the lemon law. They give you darn near full price in trade and give you any other BMW model of choice at cost.

However, if you want an X6, I would keep what you have. A new one will have the same issues. I am not sure what is up with all the HPFP failures.

This is only your 3rd post? Did you ever post pics of your X6?

You are the only one I have heard of that has dealt with the HPFP issue on an X6.

My original "battery problem" manifested itself as a fuel pump problem, I mention this since as Chuck noted you haven't posted much so I wonder if you have seen the other threads, just a thought. Chuck is correct if you wantt an X6 it's better to stick with what you have and get problems ironed out, BMWNA is really good about taking care of issues.

I think a couple of us in x6 35i have reported the HPFP problem; I did. The dealer replaced it immediately and no problems since in my case.

Be nice and don't detest BMW yet. BMW NA will work with you and helped me thru my issues with my 2008 X6 50i and helped me get into to an '09 and I have not had any more problems since being in the new model. They were great to work with.

Hallo from Greece!! Sorry to hear that you have problems with the fuel pump. I had the same problem too, I got my car back a week ago! It was not the main fuel pump but the 3rd that is before the injection as the mechanic at my dealer said! I could start the car but i had reduced power and almost no Turbo's! Hope that I would not have to go back to the dealer again! For your releaf Bmw is aware of this problem as it has appeared in other series with the N54 engine.

My 2009 X6 35i was taking longer to start, then ran ruff once, had to restart, then this morning went to pass on the highway, it shuddered and weny into "Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power". This went away again on restart, but its' at the dealer now. They say they will replace the fuel pump and reprogram the controller. I guess they do both now to correct this. Is this consistant with others? Why have others had it multiple times?

I wonder if my X6 problem is related with the presure pump? Everytime I fill up the tank the gauge needle never go up to full, sometimes half, sometimes 3/4 until 2nd or 3rd time I restart the engine. But last time I had BMW checked and they couldn't find any error.

Not sure it is related. But my car was towed back in November 2009.

I was leaving a restaurant and the engine stalled. Tried to restart several times but the car was acting like it was out of gas. The fuel gauge read 1/4 tank left.

Come to find out the X6 fuel tank is"tanks", two split to balance weight. When you fill the first tank a transfer pump/valve moves gas into the other tank balancing out the weight of the gas.

Anyway, the transfer pump failed and as a result, the remaining fuel was not being pumped over to the other tank. Had I known this I could have gotten some gas put in and avoided being towed.

Anyway, if you are not getting good readings, maybe the pump/valve is sticking and driving the car jars the part to work again.

What's the total volume of both tanks? Can both tanks be filled up full tank?

I am not sure. But I suspect both are the same size (approx. 11 gallons each).

Attached is the pic of the gas tank(s) from real oem. You can clearly see it is one unit comprised of two tanks. It looks designed to wrap around sub-frame.

You can see that the way it is designed, a pump is needed to move gas over the middle hump into the other tank. You would have thought a hose could have been used at the lowest point to have agravity feed negating the need for an electric pump.

Hi! I am new to the site and recently purchased an X6. I had it for about 6 months. I am having what I call a “hesitation to start” issues, sometimes once a day (regardless if the car is cold or warm) when I start the car it cranks for a good 6 – 10 seconds. Sometimes it even shuts off and no start. Other times it hesitates and when it starts I get a very rough idle to the point that the car is seriously shaking and I need to shut it down…then I start again and NO problem. This week I noticed that my navigation CD is not being recognized when the car starts.

Is this the same problem you guys are having? Have you seen this before?

I took the car to the dealer and after a fight with the SA who tells me this is normal she came back and said I had a faulty battery and replaced it. Clearly BS but i gave it a try. The car started with no problem… I went to work and back to the car in one hour and well….the problem is still there.

Any ideas?

My seems fixed. I had the delayed start, engine shutter and the reduced power message, clears when re-start, and reduced gas milage drops from 16.5 to 14. The dealer reloaded software and changed the high pressure fuel pump. BMW had to reduced approved the fuel pump replacement. If yours does this insist on the replacement and software update. I do drive mine hard.

Well…I got the car back from the dealer (2nd time for the same issue). The fuel pump was replaced and the software updated. Drove home…a few hours later started the car and once again a really long crank. This is getting frustrating. I called the dealer back and they suggested that I bring it back and they would change the pressure sensor. Is there an end to this?

This is my 3th BMW not counting the 2 others from my wife…I am growing very disappointed not to mention frustrated at BWM.
