I work second shift at Boeing, working from 12:30pm-1am, so I haven't gotten fully into the install yet. Yesterday I flashed both modules, today I pulled the kick panel, a few harnesses and then ran outta time while trying to be OCD about the routing.

I watched their install video on a 3 series, but I'm going to go a step further by removing one heater duct so I can neatly route the wiring and get easier access to the brake switch. I figure if I had a good 3hrs straight time, this could be done. Since the 3 series is slightly different, I'm going to document my install with some pics and create a new how-to thread (I'll link it here) that's more E7* specific.

Hey m5james, so I'm currently looking for remote starters again for the x5 and was wonder how you made out with kickyride. I'm looking at their OL-RS-BM1 kit with OL loader cable and Possibly an RF-51-EDP range extender. Did you ever write up that How to? The install instructions looks like there is splicing involved, is that correct? Please let me know, these cold starts in the morning are driving me crazy, I've been spoiled with remote starts in my previous vehicles.

Check flashlogic, idatalink and Fortin. They all make remote starters for BMW.

Hmm, looks like the cost is around $900. I'd like to hope that the RS involves a module and some coding vs splicing of wires! :-(

Yes, it's all plug and play...no cutting required. It works good but it's not perfect and.sometimes the two systems sometimes conflict with each other. Let's say I lock the truck with comfort access and then I'll do a remote start before coming back...after coming back there will often be a 4-5 handle pulls delay before comfort access responds. Sometimes after locking the truck with the Kickyride ride remote, I'll get back into the truck and the truth will act like I don't have the key on me, forcing me to put it into the dash. Sometimes the truck will have the key profile from my physical key, sometimes it'll have the key profile from the key I had to clone to the Kickyride...I think that's a BMW issue though since I've heard of people having key issues. I LOVE the remote start for the cold and seeing people's reactions to my catless cold idle, but at $900 I've looked at other options for the GF's 535xiT.

Installed the iDatalink ADS-BM1 in my '08 X5 4.8 this past weekend.

Very easy to do, just follow the directions and no problems... only about 2 hours total including tying up the cables and cleaning up.

Everything you need (except for a few zip ties and the programming cable) is in the box.
Here are links to the E70 pages on iDatalink:
http://www.idatalink.com/search/sear...hicle_id=15669
http://www.idatalink.com/product/pro...hicle_id/15669
There are also 2 install videos in the support section that show you the simple disassembly and install process.

The complete kit can be found for <$500 on eBay and Amazon, which includes the Remote Start, 2 long distance (2500+ feet) remotes (a 2 way and a 1 way) and it also works with your BMW keyfob (3 presses of the Lock button) as well.
*** You can add Smart Phone Control as well as other 3rd party remotes ***

You will need the ADS-USB programming cable so you can program the system to your vehicle and also capture the BMW keyfob info.
Also, IE for your browser, it will NOT work with Firefox, didn't try any others, but I believe IE is the only browser supported.
Here is the programming cable you will need: http://www.idatalink.com/accessories.../product_id/45
Look on eBay, should be around $25...

Simply disconnect 3 connections (2-CAS, brake switch) under the steering column, insert the 2 wiring harnesses, do the VERY SIMPLE web based config/programming, and you're done.
No coding, no cut wires, no major disassembling of your X (kick panel & vent), and you can remove it at any time!

Here is a great DIY for a 1 series, but the process is exactly the same for E70:ADS-BM1 Install DIY

Great product demo video in a 3 series:

I'm not affiliated with any of the companies, just wanted to share an awesome product/upgrade for your X!

VERY Highly recommend this!
John

Some additional information:

The system creates a copy of one of your BMW Keyfobs, stores it in the RS internal memory, and it uses this to access the security and start features as if you had placed a BMW keyfob in the slot.

Your X will see the RS as Key#3 (assuming you have 2 keys) so you don't need a key to drive away. Just unlock the doors with the remote button and you can drive away with no BMW keyfob needed. So, it kinda provides CA Start for those who don't have it, as far as the engine start process is concerned. (You will need to insert your BMW keyfob in the slot periodically to charge it, if you don't have CA.) You will have to set your seat, mirrors, audio, climate, etc once you use the RS, as they will be stored with key #3. Your settings for #1 and #2 won't change at all.

It doesn't mess with CA at all, still functions as normal after the engine is running but not during the start process itself (only a few seconds). You will of course have to have a BMW keyfob with you to use it as normal for the doors/locks... In this case it will use the settings for the #1/#2 keyfob as usual.

I'm with you on the $250 for the Ford , but with BMW I can see it being this high at $1200 mostly cause it's very uncommon and probably difficult with the security in the key on the e70/e71 with the push to start button and however many extra modules it will need, in addition to the specialty of those to be able to do it. Plus the ///M tax for those w x5m x6m

I wonder if you have to actually surrender a key into that key box which then it uses to start the vehicle

Thanks. I'm ordering one from kicky now. Looks like its:

Part # OL-RS-BM1 FOR $350
And KR-RS for $125 which is the optional smart phone module and service for 1 year

Do you recall which long range transmitters you purchased?
