Could pick up an X5M on Tuesday but starting to worry...

Hey Guys,

Been anxious to get back into an M since I got rid of the M6 3 years ago. I've found a 2011 X5M in Colorado for $40k and it has done 51k miles. With the M6 I had a full BMW warranty which was a life saver as multiple things went wrong on the car and were very expensive to fix. This X5M however comes with no warranty and I need some advice on buying one.

Also, despite having a clean carfax it only has 3 service entries on it and I'm worried about potential costs for this car.

I think i'd like to get it inspected by a professional before I sign and drive it away. What are the major things I should get them to check?

unfortunately there's nothing similar in the CPO channels at the moment so that's not an option.

The 2010? I was just looking at that today! Good luck!

You can always get a full bumper to bumper warranty for a reasonable cost through any Penske owned BMW dealership. Not many know about their warranty program, I didn't until this year, and I'm considering using them for the next vehicle.

Good stuff, I wasn't aware of the Penske warranty. I had read through the linked thread in the first reply but I was more interested in a list of things I should get checked out thoroughly before buying the car.

No, it's not the 2010 one - it's the 2011 model so hopefully any issues that arose earlier on will have been fixed.

When I purchased my 2011 I contacted my local dealer and got a copy of the full history. Carfax typically only has a snip it. And accidents will only show if the owner or insurance reported to carfax. And from the history I found the name and address for the previous owner and spoke to him about his experience and service history. Truck checked out so I bought it. Not so with a 2012 I was looking initially. I called the previous owner and he told me to run. His truck had several issues that did not appear on carfax and were not clearly documented in BMW's system. He dumped it on a dealer just before the warranty ran out.

Interesting - I'll give the dealer a call on Monday and see if they are able to give me some more information.

You'll want to ask for something called a DCS report. It will show you all service done at a dealer under warranty. It gets a little more sketchy if any service was performed outside of warranty, but it's only got 51K on it anyway, so you should be good. Take that report and bounce it up against what you've read in various threads. If problems XYZ have already been fixed, then you're in great shape. If they haven't presented yet, just keep in mind that they could be coming and budget appropriately.

The DCS also has the current (or last) owner's name and address. Some dealers will not give you the DCS citing confidentiality but in response you should just tell them to black out the owner's information. If you get lucky and get the person's name, you can call them and/or check them out on the usual social media sites, and basically form an opinion of the person who owned it previously.

When I was last on the hunt I was looking at a truck in Denver from a PP. The owner used Schomp for everything and when I called them they were very helpful.

GL!

Thanks goodmaj! I will ask for that report on Monday. Looks as though anything that has been done was done at Littleton which is only 100 miles away from me so will probably be my local dealer anyway.

Looking forward to getting the car!

Let us know what you end up doing. I'd never buy a BMW, let alone an M without any type of warranty.

Also, don't forget that sometimes a car might not be advertised as CPO, but when you run the VIN, it will show up as a CPO.

A warranty is a great idea for the guys that only wants to drive his car and has no idea how to fix anything. For every storing somebody has given where the warranty paid for a repair there are several stories where the warranty refuses to pay. If you go the warranty route be sure to find a warranty that covers the potential issues that may arise on the x5m. Like injectors and drive line shaft. Otherwise you are just wasting your money on false hopes.

I have bought 3 M vehicles with no warranty and sleep well at night.

Yeah, well I had multiple issues with the M6 but mainly to do with the SMG gearbox - I understand that the gearboxes in these X5Ms are more reliable.

OK - picked it up today and I'm delighted with the car. Also, Schomp BMW were able to confirm that the car has had all its scheduled maintenance at their workshop which makes me even happier. I still haven't bought a warranty but I'll either reserve the warranty money for future repairs or perhaps get the Penske one - more research is needed.

In any case, the car is hugely impressive. My wife just had a blast through the mountain pass behind our house and has now decided that she wants to trade her Cayenne for one.

Yikes

Thanks everyone for your input.

There is roughly zero percent chance of that happening!

OK - took it for a spin in the mountains and stopped to take a couple of shots...

I stopped to take this photo - it was a stunning day.

The holes in the front bumper are annoying - I'll have to get them filled and painted.

Congrats on another Colorado X5M! I was just at Schomp BMW today and had a good experience. On the way back from the dealer, I ran into this clown, who apparently could neither drive his exotic, nor stomach having GoPro footage of getting smoked by an SUV...

Re: the front license plate, if you ever park in Denver or at DIA with it, be prepared for a $75 ticket. I had one of my cars (sans front plate) parked within a few inches of the parking deck wall at DIA and still got a ticket, they're zealous about their revenue collection.

Re: warranty, I just got a 30k mile exclusionary warranty through Carchex for about $3k that includes the high tech/nav stuff in the car. As much as I like the car, I'm expecting that it will likely pay for itself.

Good tip about the front plate - I will just stick it in the window if I park there in that case - that's all I'm legally required to do!

Thanks for the tip on the warranty; I think I'll maybe go the same route. I rarely use the stereo anyway with the engine note of this car.

With cars like this I normally budget around $3k / year for maintenance and around $5k / year for exotics that require regular cam belt changes etc. So, I just have to balance in my head whether that is best reserved for emergencies or spent up front on a warranty. So far the car is gliding so smoothly and the history is comprehensive so it's a tough decision. It's had the front drive shaft inspection and the injectors etc done under warranty in the last 5k miles so it *should* be in good shape. I hope I haven't just jinxed it.
