X5d Weekend Trip: Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway

If you like this thread, please vote it for bimmerpost frontpage! There's not enough E70 X5's on the frontpage anymore

Over the weekend my wife and I drove along parts of the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. Total round trip was around 1200 miles and the X5 used 1.5 tanks of diesel and averaged 25.5 mpgs. Tire inflation was set at the maximum in the manual (41/48 I think). Not bad considering we were climbing a lot of mountains and had a trunkload of stuff on the way back (tax free shopping in Oregon!)

The X5d was awesome carving up the mountain highway and was strong climbing I-5's mountain roads. High speed straight line stability was on part with my M3, and I attribute it to the OEM Dueler tires.

First set of pictures:

Lassen Volcanic National Park

To be honest, ever since buying my X5 in January, I haven't had a good chance to compare it side by side with another LCI X5 with sport package. I noticed that my grills are the titanium slats from the 50i. The 214 20's look facking boss over the 334s

Awesome pics. i have a 2011 35d with 72K on the clock with the 214's sapphire black. I bought it back in March 2015 with 71K on it.

Any issues with yours? Also, how many miles do you have on her.

Hey, I just rolled over 52k on this trip. Mine is a 2012 CPO and extended maintenance that I bought with 48k back in January.

I plan on putting significant mileage on this car for the next 3 years due to the free maintenance.

So far, I have no issues, the car got all its emissions equipment recalls performed. I've only been fighting my dealer on getting an additional programming done to manually trigger the regen call "diesel injection timing".

I've already bought my replacement tires. The Duelers were great on this road trip and it turned very sharply. But I need the truck to be more of an all-season vehicle, so I bought Nitto Motivos last month for $750 shipped.

A quick question, did your 2011 come with platinum grills or black/chrome grills?

Thanks for the reply. I wish now I would of bought a 12 for the LED coronas. I bought some LUX but they will never compare to OEM. However, my 35d came from Miami and I live in IL. The fact that it never saw any snow plus all the packages it came with was a no brainer. I was skeptical about buying something with 71K on it but car fax was clean and I had a higher up at BMW look up the maintence history and it was in for normal service. I fell in love with the cinnamon brown leather interior that combined with the black is beautiful. To answer your question about the grill, it came chrome and I swapped it out to all black. It came with the sport package with 336 19's however I upgraded to the 214's. Looks much more aggressive now. I have the Duehler run flats currently but next I want to either do DWS or Michilin (non run flat).

So far my mods have been:
214's, weather tech mats, tint (front windows and windshield), tinted taillights, LUX corona, LED fog lights, LED interior lights, LED license plate light, LED reverse light, black kidney grille.

Very impressive, i bought from bimmiam.com. They match the xenon headlights perfectly as that was the look i was going for. They are purely cosmetic and don't serve as light to break the fog. However, i don't really think BMW designed the fog lights for that purpose because the 2011-2013 models have them much closer together. Their function is for cornering.

The fog lights were designed to illuminate the surrounding areas of the front of the car. The lights are scattered slidways and downward.

While the color of the aftermarket fog blub is likely a good match, I'm not so sure there's enough of the same light output for the actual purpose of shining on surrounding sections

Correct if i wanted functionality i would of stuck OEM however in my personal preference LED fogs look better so that's why i made the change. I noticed the new 2015 X5's have this feature.
