New member with 2008 X6
Hi folks,
New member here. I just picked up a new 2008 BMW X6. There seems to be a lot of love for this vehicle on this forum. Another forum I checked out was full of bashers. Anyway I have owned several bimmers over the years and felt I was ready for a sedan/SUV type vehicle. The X6 fits the bill on several fronts. My dealer had the typical launch vehicles in red/black loaded, or green/tan stripped. I knew what I wanted and was deciding to order or not. So when I looked on line I saw my dealer had a white/black one. I called to inquire about options on the vehicle. He said he did not know they had it and proceeded to check. It turns out someone ordered two X6's, black/black, and white/black but the the dealer refused to sell because the buyers bought them for export. Apparently this is a no no. Any way, it turns out the white X6 was configured exactly as I wanted. Imagine that. Here is what I got. 2008 X6 Alpine white, Black Nevada leather, Bamboo Trim Premium Package Sport Package with 20's and anthracite headliner (love those big beefy tires) Comfort Access Sat Radio Soft close doors Sun shades for rear doors Premium sound (includes iPOD adapter) Technology Package (can also play DVD movies when parked) Rear climate package Auto tail gate Heated front seats Also has standard folding mirrors and spare tire. When the dealer prep'd the car and brought it around front, everyone stopped in time and gazed. It is really a looker. Power is adequate. I am sure the V8 turbo will be a monster but I am happy with the 300 TT engine. Apparently I am the first one to receive an X6 in San Diego. Not sure if this is good or bad. I was not sure after seeing the red and green one on the lot. But I know now after seeing the Alpline white that this is the SUV/SAC, whatever it is called for me.

That is a very nice X6. Looks clean in white and black. Well done with the photos. I live in San Diego also, but ordered mine and it was built last week. Now the wait. Tiag/black. I'll keep an eye out for your white one on the 5. Congrats and I too like this forum, mostly positive vibes. Cheap

Congratulations! Absolutely love the white (1st choice, black would be 2nd choice, silver 3rd choice. I'm so traditional).
How do you like the soft-close doors? Are they a must-have option? +1 this forum is my goto for X6. It's really the best. |

However if you come home at night it is nice to shut the door without slamming it and waking the family. Two options I have on my 645 is HUD and active steering. I chose not to get them this time. I think HUD is great however unless it is an M car, the only real use is when using navigation. Otherwise it is simply a speed indicator. So not much use day to day. Active steering was interesting. Seemed to make things easier, but I do not like the funny noises the steering makes as a result of having A/S. So I could live without this option as well.

Thanxs for your input. Your impression of the soft close door was similar to what I was thinking when I tried them out at the dealers. Figured since you are in the car more, your experience with closing the door would be more accurate. Totally agree with you on the HUD. Really not sure why they don't have the RPM displayed in normal HUD's as in M's. That would really be useful. |

Having the speed display digitally in the HUD is ergonomically a good idea. The only interest one would normally have in the speedometer is to check one's speed against the speed limit; otherwise, presumably you drive at whatever speed feels safe and natural regardless of what shows on the dial in front of you. Since speed limits are always posted as digital numbers (is there another kind?) it makes sense to compare them with one's own speed displayed the same way. And having one's own speed displayed floating ahead of the front of the vehicle, it is easier to compare that to a limit sign than having to look down at the speedo.
With the tach, it is different. It is the relative speed of the engine that determines gear change points, so an analog tach will always be preferable to a digital one. If the X6 were truly a standard transmission, I would agree with mtech8 that it would be good to have engine speed displayed in the HUD. But tachometers in automatics are mainly just for show anyway, so I can't get too excited about not having it show in the HUD. chuck92103: Congrats on the purchase! Please post your driving impressions when you've had a chance to run up a few miles on the odometer. |

Tail automatically opens and closes with remote, comfort access, etc. Also, since it swings rather high, there is a height adjustment in iDrive for those with lower garage ceilings.
What is nice about the tail gate is it functions like a manual/auto gate. i.e. As it opens you can stop it easily with your hand and move it up and down. If it is adjusted to open lower, you can open it further manually. Very nice design.
