X5M and X3 M sport comparison, am I wrong with this idea?

So recently I got a 35i X3 M sport, with the Dynamic Handling package, and basically all of the options. (Including all of the performance ones)

I had also looked at some pre-owned X5M's, and have driven a few on test drives and driven a friend's X6M on a longer basis.

OK, obviously the X5M has a lot more power and is faster, plus it's an X5 and larger.

Having that out of the way, I feel that the X3 35i M sport has a very close family resemblance to the X5M. The seating position, steering feel, suspension feel when in sport+, and especially the sounds from the turbo. (Like that pop you get on upshift)

The X5M is heavier and the exhaust is a bit muted, but I really do feel like the X3 drives in a similar fashion.

Do you guys think I am far off? Obviously the X5M is faster, and it does most likely handle a bit better - but in sporty driving on a daily drive, it shares a good deal of the characteristics of the X5M. It makes sense, as it is tuned to a sporty fashion as well. (The X3 is...the transmission is quick, suspension and steering very tight in sport+, etc)

Really??!!!

What you are saying is like comparing a Loaded Mercedes GLK, to a Loaded ML63 AMG.
While I am sure they might share some similar characteristics(as all cars and suv's do)
but apples to oranges(or in this case apples to durian!!)

Only you would know if you're far off or not mate. It's very subjective. I personally think that's great feedback when an X3 M Sport can give you an X5M experience.

No offense - you cannot compare the 2 trucks.

It's like a minor league team vs the Pro team.

It's wild that you thought they were similar

I guess it is subjective - I think part of it has to do with the x5m being more subdued and quiet, and the similarities with both being turbo.

When I drove a e92 M3, it was a huge difference from my 335i. The exhaust was amazing and the car just responded instantly.

I just didn't get that feeling from the x5m vs the x3 35i m sport as much.

Anyone driven both?

Yeah - of course in M mode. I think the thing with the X5M, is that while it does have tremendous performance, it's not really "in your face" and visceral like other M cars have been in the past. (The same can be said about the new M5, M6, etc)

Due to the nature of the turbo engine, and the fact it's a big SUV - I think a lot of that performance gets masked under this veil, and while it is going very fast - you don't get as much driver feedback about the intensity of it all.

M mode behaves different in X5M compared to M sedans..if you really want to feel the power then press M button and then shift the gear to Sport

I moved from ML63 AMG to X5M and was not happy with the acceleration as I thought the M mode takes care of everything..then one day while in M mode, I shifted the gear in Sport..and then I warped 4 seconds into the future

You sure all the M settings were set to sport etc? Its kinda sad that you couldn't see a noticeable difference between the two trucks especially considering all the extra hardware you get on the x5m. I do agree that the x5m masks how fast you are truly going in stock form, with a tune that problem is addressed IMO. Good for the x3 I guess...

OP, I see what you're saying... they aren't WAY different. The X3 M-sport is a very good looking SAV (other than the headlamps LOL). I expect that by the time the next body style comes out - if they fix the headlamp look - it will be awesome. I have two X5s but I like the size and more nimble nature of the X3... just not the looks and some of the cheaper interior components. If they beefed up the luxury a bit more like the new X5 interior, it would be a winner.

Comparing it to the X5M though is a bit of a stretch... more like comparing the X3 m-sport to the X5 m-sport. If they made an X3M that would have probably sealed the deal for me!
