i just took a video of the function i was referring to in my replies before
you can clearly see that pressing and holding the tailgate key will make it close ... and taking your finger off the button will stop it from going down any further MeEmZ

I want this option, most likely one of those options only available outside US.

Anybody in North America have a relationship with BMW mechanic who could investigate? We know its now possible, its just a matter of getting it to work. I personally would be happy muting the alarm to have this function. The car still has security, regardless of if the alarm sounds. |

my order also included "Automatic tailgate opening and closing" but continually pressing on the tailgate key on the fob just sets off the alarm, so must be country specific option. On the USA site the text just says you can open with button but doesn't say it's the one on the fob. p.s. before someone points it out, yes I know it says "X5" but that's what shows up on a "build your own" for X6 (packages) on US site. But it's nice to know it could be done on the X5 with safe-close system, guess the markup for the X6 was too large to include it.

Very interesting. I think I read somewhere that US models have the useless alarm installed whereas Non-US models do not. I wonder if it is possible to disable the alarm somehow and then it will work for us. I would much rather have that feature than have the alarm. That is what Lojack and comprehensive insurance is for.

It's not actually an alarm but a "panic alarm" , if you are getting mugged on the way to your car you can push it to set off the alarm and attract attention. I think it's like the "driver door only unlock" and understandably appeal more to women than men. some have suggested that the non fob closing tailgate is due to liability issues but other manufacturers cars have it so just don't get it. Agree wish we could dump the alarm and enable it.

I think BMW logic escapes most of us when it comes to options, especially considering all X6's are produced at the same plant.

for example Lamburghinis have auto sliding engine covers so not having an option of key operated opening/closing might be sensible, if that was the case with our cars then i might be considered as a reliability issue MeEmZ

I bought a small step-ladder in Dallas a couple of years ago. It had SEVEN warning labels on it! The same thing in Canada just says "Not a step" on the top rung -- in two languages, of course. |
