Did you try the top left forward and back controls to flip the pages of this article???
Interesting article and comparison. If and this is a BIG IF the X6M is really all that it claims it will be, I think it would demolish the other cars on the track seeing as how close the Porsche Turbo, BMW X6 50i, MB ML63 AMG and to a lesser extend the new Audi Q7 V12 6.0 TDI rated!!!

Granted, looks are a subjective issue, but I think the X6 also looks a lot better than the Porsche (at least IMHO).

But I agree that for a fair comparison, they need to be handled/used all equally if they sport the same options. Also, again, I get the feeling the driver/reporter favored the MB (reading the article and going on about how great the MB is right of the bat...).

does anyone think the x6 needs better breaks ?? It seams that the x6 is slowest into corners and it could catch up every single time. What if it had better breaks ? wouldn't that put it on top ?

Of course the X6M will smash the opposition.
If you ever drove another 4x4, you know how good the X6 is. Even the X5 can seem a bit heavier / clumsier in comparison to the X6, and the X5 was already the absolute reference in terms of handling. Porsche Mercedes and the others don' t know how to make a sporty 4x4 yet, their 4x4 feel more like trucks in comparison. |

The ultimate comparo
Money talks BS walks.
Lets have a quarterly sales figures worldwide & by country of SUV sales, by model/engine. Does anyone have access to these figures? JD powers/Des rossier?? Though the automotive journalists all have valid professional opinions, the consumers who put down their hard earned, after tax dollars are the ultimate judge, reflected in sales figures. People are creatures of habits & prejudice because of exposure to various life experiences. Even if 10 people have ml 6.3, Cayenne turbo 3, x6 5.0, RR sport/HSE, Audi q7, Hummer H2/H3 in their garage, will have a different "favorite' on any given day. |

Lot's of people buy things for looks, their personal preference or what they can afford at the time they make the purchase. So if 10 people buy SUV x and 5 people buy SUV y, does that mean that SUV x is better than SUV y? I don't think so. So looking at sales numbers will definitely not tell you what's better. Narrowing it down a bit more (like you stated at the beginning) may make for a better comparison). There are also other factors you would have to bring into this comparison, e.g. brand/model awareness (how long has this particular model been on the market and how many people know about it).

I'don't know if there is some "rumors" but...
"At the Nurburgring racetrack, BMW X6 M has proven to be faster than the E46 M3 and finished a full lap in less than 8 minutes. BMW is proud of the performance they achieved in this car and they seem the X6 M and X5 M as opportunity to preview the performance that will be seen in the next M models, with the M5 being the first one to receive a twin-turbo engine." http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/04/09/ne...comment-116822 the M3 E92 lap it's 8:05 and the X6 5.0i lap it's 8.54... |

I agree the test/drivers seems to have a preference for the MB to start with.
I also think the x6's rear axle characteristics freaked him out a little bit, and with a couple more practice laps could well have beat the Porsche. They mentioned in the article it was a little unsettling, and if you look at the x6's speed into the first couple of turns was excellent, but the last few turns were a little slower in and out of the turns. I think this is due to driver error mostly due to being unaccustomed to the outside rear wheel pulling as it does. He should have driven it harder to overcome the understeer at the limit. Doing that he could have easily shaved the 0.1 off his time to beat the Porsche. As noted above, the M version should change the scenario in the next stack up, as BMW indicates it going to drive more like rear wheel drive rather than all wheel drive. Side note: I think it's interesting that now days these drivers all have the drifting craze when it comes carving corners. For some reason they think you're not really driving if you can't brake loose the rear end midway through a curve. Both the MB and the Porsche allow you to break loose the rear end rather easily, and likely why they prefer them over the x6. The fact is spinning your tires coming out of a corner means lost time. |

article says "“impressive, amazing in corner and doesn’t feel that you’re riding in a car that weighs 4,894 lbs”. x6 501 is 5269 lbs. x6 35i is 4894 lbs. Is that a misquote or did they find a way to shave weight off the M?
