Question on new BMW navigation. Is it just me, or it really sucks?
Just added a new X5d to my E90 335i. Never thought I will love driving an SUV that much. However, I find that bmw navigation really sucks comparing to others. I haven't played much with it yet, but what I find is that not only it doesn't say street names, it doesn't even display them. To me it's very poor by today's standards. Even my 10 years old Lexus RX has the street names displayed.
Is that the way the newest BMW navigation is, or do I need to read the manual more careful on how to set it up? |

I'm using a 3D view, no split screen. Don't remember zoom amount, but I haven't changed that - left it as it was by default. How much should I zoom to view the street names?
Thank u. |

1) My 5 year old portable Garmin seems to have better software programming than the BMW. But the BMW is adequate.
2) Try reading the Manual. There are a lot of settings, including Map View and Route Preference, which will significantly change your navigation. |

When using the nav (i.e. you have a destination set) be sure you have split screen on, and have the "Arrow Display" set as the split screen content ( FYI - "Arrow Display" is not even an option to select unless you have an active destination). That will also show the name of the street you are on, and the name of the street of your next turn. |

BMW has never spoken street names, which is probably a good thing. If you set split screen as described above though it will prompt you and it includes street names listed at top of turn display screen.
Even if split screen is set to say "entertainment", when a turn is imminent it will interrupt the screen with turn information. These are all in the settings.

Yep, I've already figured it all out - zoom and split screen settings. Thanks very much for your help, guys...

It is horrific. It has mis-routed me or not been able to find the street address (keeps wanting to change the city) in my last 9 times out of 10. I'm going to start using the Google upload feature from now on. The issue is that I two BMW vehicles and can't figure out how to make it talk to a specific one.

You need to have both cars on different email address. It uses a combo of VIN and email to send to car, if both are registered to same email address it could be an issue.

Ever since BMW switched over to teleatlas the routing algorithms have degraded. Navteq routing data was much improved.

Split Screen vs HUD
Watrob you are right on mate! No need for split screen with HUD Nav Arrow so your display map view is much bigger and that HUD is soooooooooo in your face you cant possibly miss the relevant streets or arrow direction (not to mention the speed your not supposed to be going). I never leave home without HUD.

I agree Nav is bad. Seems like quite a lag in updating roads. I'd suggest using split screen with arrow as the second screen, than you can adjust the maps distance control to zoom in or out. just wait till you want to upgrade and they charge you an arm + a leg to do the computer install. No DVD. My dealer didn't even realize BMW changed their system.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but if you thought this was bad, try a Volvo Nav system.
Took a 4 hour trip yesterday into the mountains with a lot of small roads in a 2013 X5 and the vast majority of the instructions were what I would have chosen myself. The only problem was I didn't know how to set it up for next turn arrows and distance to next turn in the split screen. |
