Motor Oil for X6 M
Hi Everyone,
For the life fo me, I can't find any info on what kind of motor oil to use for my 2010 x6 M. The manual does not specificly say what kind of oil and say to call BMW NA to find out what oil to use. Thats kinda strange...?!?! Is it any weight approved by BMW or is it the "M" 10-60w that is used by all the NA M motor? Thanks! Mike |

Check w/ Parts dept. of ur dealer

Go to ur 3 different dealers' parts dept & say u need a qt of oil to top up ur vehicle model & see if they all recommend the same type for u. I think it all comes from Castrol anyways. They just bottle it in a BMW container. Castrol Edge maybe the best u can get from other auto suppliers. unless u r tracking ur car, & as long as it's full synthetic i don't think it matters a whole lot as long as the grade is the same. If u r in a town w/out ur oil type & grade, u may have to add something just to tie u over 'til u get back to the city. Better slightly different grade then no oil at all! BMW would like you to buy the oil from the dealer with the BMW part number.
I have purchased and am quite confident in using Castrol Syntec with the European Formula on the label. Also on the back it will say BMW LONGLIFE-01 The manual shows the following information about Alternative oil grades on page 243: The packaging must included one of the following indications of oil specifications Preferred: BMW Longlife-01, BMW Longlife-01 FE Alternative: BMW Longlife-98, API SM or higher Viscosity levels approved are 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 and 5W-30 In cold climates use the 0W and in areas where it doesn't get that cold you would want to use the 5W in my opinion. The 40W would be better under very HOT conditions. |

Thanks Landlord! I am just so used to using the M specific motor oil on my previous M cars that I am a bit lost with the X6 M when the manual does not say anything specific...lol. I still remember the fiasco of filling E46 M3s with regular oil at dealers in the very beging when they started using the M specific 10w-60 Castro. That's why I am a bit hesitant to trust what the dealers say. Especially when the X6 M is rare and breaks all the rules for late model M cars (no specific oil and no 1200 mile break in oil service). |

That is assuming that the dealer put the right oil in the trunk bag in the first place!! In the case of my M3, that assumption was wrong as the oil placing in the trunk bag by the dealer was the oil for regular 3 Series cars, not the special "M" oil. I caught the mistake and swapped for the correct oil at the dealers, plus an extra litre for their error.

BMW Tech said for warmer/hot climates, the Twin Power BMW 10w-60 is fine for the E71 X6M.
