Unless a bimmer's different, you need to remove the upper engine parts, valve cover, front cover, timing chain, camshaft, spark plugs.
Then you apply pressure in the cylinder one by one (to prevent valves from dropping into the engine cylinder), then do Exhaust, then intake valve by removing the locks and springs, removing and replacing valve seals. On some cars you may have to shim the valve springs, or replace a few. When completed, you reinstall everything. Everytime you do those kind of job, you're in for some surprises. And, if your car comes with a timing belt instead of a chain, good time to replace it, along with belt tensioner, and maybe the water pump. Just in gaskets, it'd be more than 50$. I'd say that 50$ should cover the valve seals, and maybe the front cover gasket. For a dealer, 2k$ seems close, 5k$ seems excessive. A good german mechanic should be around 1200 - 1500$, including parts. |

What are the symptoms that make you think you got bad valve seals?
Is it excessive oil consumption? Smoking? |

There is a LOT of discussion on the cost for seal jobs in the 7-series forum @ bimmerfest. Dealer's are asking around $3,500 for the job but you can get an independent to do the work for around $2K. Parts are a LOT more than you guys are outlining here. I think it's around $600 in part costs. Only guy did his himself over 3 weeks and it wasn't 'easy'.

The only parts that were outlined were the seals (4 valves per cylinders x 6) and the front cover gasket, and the price was displayed just to point out that 50$ wouldn't cover that much in this kind of job.

For the same engine, in a different car, price will vary simply because some cars have more space to work and could be taken apart much easier. Would require several hours more to work on the same engine in a 7 serie vs an X5. I'd be able to do it in a day (a looooong one), and the cost would be 600$ for me. Then again, I did it several times... And don't ask, I won't do it anymore.

Is this relevant to the N63 only or the S63 as well?

That's about what my dealer charged for the coolant lines to the turbos. It was expensive and not covered by CPO Seems like you'd get a better deal on that job if they have the motor dropped for the valve seals? I had several other items taken care of when the seals were done - labor costs were a fraction of normal for those repairs with the motor out/full access. |

Valve stem seal replacement is 45 hours labor. You can do the math @ your dealer $/hour rates. Have you looked at the Bang vs BMW settlement? You may be entitled to a new motor at substantially low cost to you based on your miles (miles under 60k, bmw pays 95%, IIRC).
https://bangclasssettlement.com/Comm...sked-Questions Turbo coolant lines are about 8 hours, and about $100 per hose for the parts. Once you get to the hoses, Replace all hoses whether they’re leaking or not. |

When my 4.4 went past 135k or so white smoke would billow from the pipes at every prolonged stop. I changed out all of the hoses and had no leaks. Finally bought 2 bottles of AT-205, 700 or so miles later and no more smoke. Every oil change I added one bottle. Never had smoke up to 196k miles, when I sold it. Sold it with a new oil change kit and 3 bottles in the back for the new owner. That X5 ran like a champ.

I just got the dreaded $7K bill from Cooper BMW for my wife's 2008 4.8i with less than 70K miles.
