New iDrive Upgrade 2009 x6
So, I had an issue with service() on my 2009 x6 and they dropped me in a 2009 328i. I was blown away by the new idrive system.
after reading some posts people said the x6 will keep the same screen so I assume its a backend update to Hard Drive. is this an upgrade I can do to my 2009 x6? in a small way I feel outside the cool crowd.. there has to be a way... Thanks ~Ryan Last edited by x6ryan; 10-22-2010 at 01:55 PM.. |

Let me rephrase my answer. Is it possible to upgrade? Yes It the cost feasible? NO. I would guess to upgrade iDrive at a minimum would cost somehwere around $5-$10k. $5-$7k in parts alone plus programming.

I believe the iDrive system is more than just software. Its the whole integration of the vehicles structure both hardware and mechanics. That's why it can't be simply plug and play.
The new iDrive is pretty sweet and I'm sure we all love to have the most updated one in our rides. Oh...and what Chuck said ^ |

Well that I understand, thanks for clearing that up. little sad that 2008-2009 wouldnt have been thought of for upgrading since the x6 is a new series of car(where is there thinking on the future). I think I can trade-in my 2009 for 53k and get a new/used 2010 for 58k with the new iDrive. although for those in the DIY world, if you want to new NAVi, get a iPad or Samsung Galaxy TAB and hang in on the dash with GoogleMaps on 3G/4G. at least it would be up do date right!...and you get a car phone. ~ryan -hmmm I wonder if there are any crashed x6's out there for parts......go go iDrive. |

1. A new dash board, else new iDrive screen won't fit 2. The controller has changed, so you need a new center console 3. All the iDrive components And even if you got all this installed, no dealer would touch it, you would not get it programmed, and you would be out of warranty. I think BMW would make it upgradable (IF) IF it were purley a gimmick. But it is so integrated with the car it is just not practical. BMW, Lexus, MB, etc. No Nav/Idrive type technology is upgradable in any of these cars.

Don't believe everything a dealer tells you.

Ok a little clarification. The screen resolution increased but the screen size remains the same. You don't need to change the dash!
However at this time no one has done a update to the idrive in the x6 or x5. Only in the e9x and e6x. In those vehicles it was mostly taking the old units out and putting the new components in. Some cables changed but mainly between the new computer CIC and the screen. Controller plugs into the existing cable harness but the center console trim piece needs to change for the new controller. The real tricky bit is recoding the new system for your cars configuration. There's a guy that can do the coding that has done all the e9x and e6x upgrades and is looking into the x5 and x6. Give it a bit of time .... Folks are working on it. |

Actually not true. For the older I-bus nav system BMW had an official retrofit so you could take advantage of the newer DVD nav computer. Things were much simpler back then with limited coding required. Today I just read MB have introduced a original accessory that upgrades existing MB nav/infotainment systems to support pandora and Bluetooth a2dp streaming. |

The 2010 vehicles are perfect for this retrofit. All previous MYs can also be retrofitted with the CIC, but there are some issues with the OEM back-up camera. |

i think bmw should lose the idrive and just provide a snap in adapter for ipod/iphone and life will be all easy - i can 600 for new iphone to get new maps, apps, b/t, music, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc and etc too - in todays world idrive should have been all about application installation like car pc and not some shitty hardware update/option story - 60k car with a i7uP = $60,500 - nope, bmw option 6SUX will cost 2500+install
