Has anyone considered that possibly BMW decided not to promote or pay Mobil 1 any incentives or royalties, or that BMW may have an interest in another (Shell) oil producer?
This could simply be a financial or marketing exercise. Maybe Mobil 1 has opted not to pay BMW for endorsement? The oil quality may not have changed at all, these things usually have some financial origin. |

PAX, Mobil 1's European formula is now GTL based which is Natural Gas to Liquid so the technology is the same. What's interesting is I haven't seen an article about BMW blaming Mobil 1 for the N63 issues but rather BMW "insiders" blame on customers not breaking in the engine as it should. Mind sharing where you got the information about Mobil 1 being blamed?
And to answer Xstatoc's comment, yes, the oil has changed (from PAO to GTL) so this is likely the reason for the loss in certification. |

Then suddenly in Jan 2015, it was Shell (using GTL as their reason). The light footedness break-in assertion started with the N62 engine ... but now is used towards the N63 also.

What's the difference between LL-01 and LL-04?
There are several oils on Amazon that claim to meet BMW Long Life-04 e.g. Castrol 03559 EDGE Black 5W-30, Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 Long Life 504.00 / 507.00 Engine Oil (5w-30)

Took this from the e90 forum.
The difference between LL01 and LL04 is that LL04 is formulated for improved exhaust cleanliness. It is a must have for the new BMW clean dielels with particulate filters. There is also some additional additives in it to help keep engine internals even cleaner than LL01 does. Those are the big differences... BMW LL04 can be used in both petrol and diesel BMWs. |
