So my family sold everything and moved onto a boat

Hey everyone. Haven’t been super active here but wanted to tell you all something. After I got out of the army my family had a house and we tried the land living thing. 6 months ago we sold everything and bought a liveaboard sailboat. We spent some time cleaning her up and making sure she was seaworthy and we finally got to take her out yesterday and go sailing. In January we are leaving Tampa and heading south for the Dry Tortugas and the Keys. From there it’s east to Bimini and the Bahamas. I took a quick video of our trip yesterday and wanted to share it with you all. If it’s not too much trouble please check out our video and let us know what you think.

That sounds awesome. Hopefully your sailing skills are better than your video editing skills

Isn't this the start of how Bill Murray got stuck on that island for a long time?

We all have to start somewhere. It’s a learning process. I actually have my Master Captains license so I am pretty good in the water. I know my video is not good but the wife has “shaky cam” and I can only do so much with bad footage. 😉

Question, when you move on to a boat as your primary residence can you pick any state to register the boat and your cars and to vote ect ect?
I live in NJ and income tax , insurance ect are killers, love to be a Delaware resident and park my boat here in jersey any thoughts on that?

Yes and no. My boat is big enough to be Federally registered with the Coast Guard. This exempts me from having to register it with the states. Florida, however, does make me pay a "use tax" of $4.95 per year to keep an antique boat in their waters. Other states vary. I only pay the fee as long as I am in Florida. I have a PO Box and mailing address in Florida. Florida has no state income tax. I send all my mail there and use it as the address on my license, etc. I do not pay income taxes since I am based in Florida but you need to have an address to establish residency. My cars and insurance go to the address. I vote in Florida as an absentee ballot. I will be spending the majority of the summer in Bahamas, South Carolina, and Virginia, but will still keep my Florida residency.
Hopefully that helps answer some questions.

Curious as to what you now do for a living or is this a sabbatical kind of thing? Are you doing home schooling? Can completely appreciate getting after a dream like this - best of luck to you and family!

Ex Navy here. We'll be building a house in the Caribbean in the near future. Island hopping on a 36' sailboat.

MKSixer See? So much better than living in the van. International waters have such lax rules about age of consent, etc.

Florida has a program called Online K-12 where she logs in and does school virtually. Most of the time the program relies on the parents to do a lot of the schooling but there are tests and subjects taught by the teacher over a program like Skype.

Awesome! We are planning to do something similar but in our RV. Not selling the house or anything for now, but by next year gf should be quitting her job so we can start hitting the road a few months at a time and see how it goes. If it wasn't for her I would totally have rented out the house and been on the road already.

Love the idea of moving to a boat after going around the US in the RV for a few years, but I get mad motion sickness so that's unlikely.

Best advice I can give is simply to do it. Wife was afraid of motion sickness but after spending a year looking at boats, renting boats, and getting on as many boats as possible, she finally picked the one we are on today. Oddly enough, the only one of us who gets sick from the motion is the cat...

Of course.
Tip: get a camera quadcopter, like the new DJI Phantom. It will automatically follow you and deliver first class footage.

Btw: best of luck
