DIY: Replace iDrive Chrome ring

The iDrive Chrome ring (part# 65829353029) is known for being poor quality. The chrome finish on the ABS plastic flakes off, creating sharp edges.

I found some DIYs on how to remove the ring. Some showing to remove the entire iDrive, others to remove buttons on the iDrive to be able to pry the ring upwards and off.

There is a much easier way to do this.

1) Get a small tool that you can pull upwards with. Like a dental pick/rubber gasket puller, or maybe a small hex key.

2) insert it into one of the little divots (they are actually holes) in the chrome ring and pull upwards. It requires very little force to do and you don't risk damaging anything.

Enjoy a fresh chrome ring that doesn't cut the tips of your fingers!

I found an internal BMW document about a recall for this little plastic part and instructions for how to replace it.

Hopefully most owners have had their fault part switched for a new one when leaving their car in for a service.

Mine was the original faulty one and I spent $30 on the original replacement.
