I was noticing the same thig (the black kidney grills). The 2012 X5M that I am looking at next week does not have the black grills. It is a US spec 2012 in AW.

Nono, we decided to change out that ugly chrome to the black ones BMW offers literally right when the dealer got the car...we couldn't stand them to be honest..I don't understand why they went through the effort to shadow the window trim etc but not the outer part of the kidney grilles...it just sticks out like a sore thumb IMO

Are your side gills still chrome or are those changed too?

You should try contacting the guys at IND, I bet they can get those side markers in the desired color.
I have to start modding mine. Also are your grills the gloss black ones or matte black?

yah i saw them on their website but they are pretty expensive for just a black painted piece..i would understand if they were color matched or something but its just glossy black..i may as well wrap them, i just gotta figure out how to get them off lol..

and they are they glossy black kidney grilles to answer your question..the outer ring (that is usually chrome) is glossy black, and the gills are matte

The wrap on the license plate frame looks good. If you do the same to the side gills show us how u took them out, etc. Are you gonna add wheels anytime soon?
