Cost of OEM hitch install - $2,000!
Hey, I've been trying to scour tow hitch posts in a short time frame but thought I'd get get a sense check from a new post. I am in a time crunch to get a hitch installed and don't have alot of time to research other options and call around. I got an estimate from Crevier in OC this morning for just over $2,000 (+-$950 for the parts). I expected it to be expensive but figured more like $1,250. Is this within the ballpark that others have paid for a dealer install OEM unit? Thanks

Hitch $495 - http://www.mybimmerparts.com/oe-bmw/71602156525
This should be the whole kit, I would confirm with them before ordering. Find an indy shop to install ... jesus man dealerships are ridiculous. |

A few more phone calls
Dealer list price on kit $600, Irvine BMW giving 15% CCA discount. Local bimmershop, 6-8hrs labor, $800 Revised, $1,400. Some dealers are the pits and I put it down to poor corporate culture and training. I have had about 10 counts of awful customer service in service and sales at Long Beach BMW. On principal I can't go back, but called them about the kit and they offered 10% discount but I had to pay upfront and had to come in to pay for it.. Crevier would not do euro delivery on an M3 when I was looking earlier this year, due to its "rarity". My experience with BMW dealers in SoCal in general over the last three years has really made me question why I stay with the brand.

You can literally save around $5-600 dollars for the same result ... BMW dealers are generally incompetent crooks that just want to make as much money from you as possible ... there are some gems out there but they are few and far between. |

These are my main contacts at Crevier whenever I need something done:
Parts Dept - Jesse Solorio Service Dept - Dan Canfield Buy the part from Jesse and have Dan write you up for installation and see what it comes out to. |

Buy the parts yourself and have a local body shop do the install if you're not a DIY'er.
I did the Execuhitch for about $700 or so and paid a local BMW specialized body shop to install. About $1000 out the door as I recall. Execuhitch about the same cost as OEM, but no bumper cutting. |

Well, all installed for total cost of $1,350. Could it have been done cheaper, yes. Are after markets better looking, yes. Did I pay dearly for leaving this install to the last minute and needing it done immediately, getting the part asap from the nearest dealer, yes..
So I have the large bumper cut out as prescribed by the OEM install guide and it's hideous. Then I stumbled upon this post, and will be buying another rear fascia trim piece and doing a custom cut to neaten it up when I get back from car week in Monterey. http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=596274

On that post you linked to for the custom cut rear fascia, the OP said he had to cut and re-weld something. Are you sure you won't need to do the same?

I'm considering how bad it would look to have a hole for the electric plug neatly cut out rather than going the cut and reweld of the bracket to a different location to have the neatest finish

Back from my trip to Monterey car week and Oktoberfest.
Observations - X5d is a fantastic tow vehicle, not that this was much weight back there (about 1,300lbs), but it accelerated like nothing was there. Held speed on cruise on any gradient and returned 23mpg which is not far off my typical open road mpg.

Ordered a drawtite hitch and a electrical kit from etrailer for about $325. Also had to order replacement plastic rivets and a gun to install them for another $30. It arrived in 3 days. I watched their videos on installation on YouTube and had the no-splice wiring kit installed in 1.5 hours and the hitch itself in 3 (by myself, took a little longer as I lacked a few of the tools that would have helped).
The time it would have taken to drive it to a shop, wait around for them to do it, and drive back home would have been about the same. Plus I learned a lot about how body clips are installed! |

WULFFZA - that is a nice RIG! I have been wanting a GS since I rented one for a week in Cali ~10 yrs ago.
Agree with others that if you have a shop or friend who can weld, you can make your own hitch for lots less, or modify anything out there. In my case, my uncle can make anything I need out of steel stock. Just need to research the wiring options.

I am kind of blown away by these numbers. Does everyone think that everyone that owns a BMW is a fool?
I just ordered a Rigid Hitch for the X5 for $194.00, Freight included, it says 75 minutes assembly time. Installation Time: 75 Minutes No Drilling Required. Requires temporary removal of bumper during installation. Fascia trimming required. Hitch crosstube concealed behind bumper. Sheesh. |
