Tough water stains on moonroof

Has anyone experienced this? It's a bit of a surprise to me but I have just taken delivery of an 2008 X5 3.0si. There were a fair bit of water stain on the panoramic moonroof which I didn't think would be of any problem.

Little do I know that it's literally impossible to clean. I took it to some windshield/window specialist and they think is due to car being parked and exposed extensive water stain from rain. Certain acidic element of the rain made their way into the glassroof!

Does anyone has any experience in dealing with this? The last option is to replace the bloody moonroof which is a USD$4k job which I really want to avoid...

There are various glass cleaning products that may take it off. Go to Autogeek.net and look around. They have quite a few. I had similar spots and used one of theirs and it worked. It had a little bit of "grit" in it but it did not scratch the glass. It also came with a pad to use to scrub it. One note, I'm not sure on international shipping from them.

Try a product which you use for Cleaning Glass cooktops, there are many around, I am not sure what you call them in Hong Kong but we call them Stove tops you should find it will clean the stains off and they should not return. (With a bit of luck) it's worth a shot before replacing the roof.

You should be able to buy it from anywhere they sell ovens.

Griot's Garage sells glass polish that is very good and will take it off. It can be used with an orbital machine or elbow grease. It might take a couple of applications, but that should remove it, unless the glass is actually etched.

P.S. That's why I always was the panorama roof just as if it were part of the painted body... very exposed up there.

Vinegar will take it right off. Yes, plain old vinegar will take off hard water spots. cheap, effective and it wont harm the glass or paint. your fingers might stink but it works well.

for really bad stains/spots you can let it soak for a few minutes.
