Sneaky ECU reset?

Does anyone know if there is a way to reset the ECU so as to clear all the adaptive drive characteristics? I could do this in my e46 and my MB w209 but have yet to see how this is accomplished with the push button start on an x5

Thanks

Wow, calm down there... Maybe people don't know how to do this?? Your subject line doesn't help either.

There are (at least) two different resets.

The 25 second reset (holding the throttle pedal down until the transmission beeps, ensuring that the engine is not running at the time) is to reset the transmission shifts, which learn your driving habits over time.

The 10 second reset (turning the ignition on, then off, 10 seconds each, then starting the engine) is to reset the adaptive throttle, which adapts to how aggressively you press the throttle.

Here's a more detailed description for the 10 second reset of throttle response:
1) Insert the key & push the start button. (Don't touch the brake pedal & don't remove the key at any time)
2) Press & hold the accelerator down for 10 seconds.
3) Without releasing the accelerator push the start button.
4) Release the accelerator.
5) Wait a full 2 minutes.
6) Start the car normally & drive to see if it's more responsive.

Thanks Brian5 i'll give those a try... I thought the title would be good as that seems to be the common search term for the reset around the euro car community. I've been modding German cars for nearly 15 yrs and that is always what it has been called.
Thanks again.. Now off to the garage to try 😀

Do you just stick the key in and then hold pedal down for 25 secs?

Yes & don't touch the brake pedal. Here's another version of the instructions I found online. I had the vent line recall after which the truck was sluggish & not as powerful it seemed. Doing this has cured the problem.

1. Key in slot, do not touch brake pedal
2. Still not touching brake pedal, hit start button
3. Floor throttle pedal for a good 30 seconds (used my phone stopwatch, it's longer than you think)
4. Still not touching brake pedal, hit start button again
5. Wait 30 seconds, I waited longer actually
6. Start the car normally

Thanks DDP2011X5M & brian5!

Tried the 25 second gas pedal trick today and my truck is a little more responsive when I stomp on the pedal now.

Note: I didn't get beep either.

Thanks to brian5 and DDP2011X5M for the instructions. I too had the vent line recall and noticed the vehicle was sluggish after the recall. The 25 sec reset has solved the problem.

The tranny did not beep. It was a "mechanical" noise right after the pedal is released.

When you press start, would that be when the lights all light up on the day without the car started (position 2), or position 1 when just the radio is on?

When you first press Start button without touching brake pedal the lights in the instrument panel will light up but car doesn't run. Now press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it for 25 seconds. Without releasing the gas pedal press the start button again and let go of the gas pedal. Wait for 25 secs start the car normally and take it out for a test drive. Car should respond better in terms of acceleration.
