Angry BMW X5 Lost Wheel Lock, Please help.

Guys please help.

I just got X5 2011, no wheel locks, looked everywhere.

Took it to dealer, they said there is no way to find a wheel lock, said we will need to break it, $400.

I think they just want to make quick buck, and I owned several BMW, normally they are quite good in service, but this is my first negative experience.

We said we want to order it, should be a way of ordering by vin number, they said go online and try to order "somewhere", but we cannot do that, we can only break a lock. Spoke with manager and everything.

????

From reading a test of wheel locks in the UK, using an impact wrench on the thing and pushing hard, will usually loosen those locks. In their 'theft' test, it took less than a minute. The best one, which took about 5-minutes, was one of the McGard versions not sold by them in the USA - those were the ones that took the 5-minutes.

I do not know how BMW does it, but all of the aftermarket versions come with a serial number that allows you to get a new key (not a lock as you mention) directly. FWIW, it's not a bad idea to get yourself a spare, just in case! these are the ones that took the 'thiefs' the longest to get off in that magazine test http://www.mcgard.de/en/home/automot...-security.html

You might ruin an impact socket in the process, but it should get them out.

Have you tried googling "how to remove wheel nut without key". There are many YouTube videos showing some tricks. Good luck.

I am sure I can brake it or loosen it, but I rather buy a new key and open, if someone can help with that it would be great, maybe my nut matches your key?

Bullcrap! I lost my wheel lock to my M3, and my dealer charged $78.00 to remove all 4 and replace them with regular studs. They have a master key set available just for cases like this. Find another dealer that is not a thief!

That's what I thought, I don't mind spending few bucks to remove these and buy new set, but $400 to break them??? They are smoking something or business is very slow.

This is Braman of Miami probably the main dealership in Miami, normally they are good with me, oil changes and all, but this is outrageous.

FWIW, if all of the locking bolts on BMW's were the same, why even bother to put them on? It may be, but as I said, I opted for some I bought in England (probably the stolen wheel capital in the world) as being much harder to remove than most others on the market for about the same price.

There should be no reason to have to break them off (and risk damaging the hub).

A plan B if good advise provided above fails. Had the same problem with a VW. A local repair shop welded a lug NUT through the hole to the locking lug bolt. Put a wrench on it and spun it off. Took a half hour and cost $30.00 plus buying four new lug bolt.

My key lock was lost by a dealer during a service. I went back and they gave me another one from their "own" set.

From this I can only gather that there isn't an infinite number of key combinations.

A good dealer can test a few keys to see which one is right for you.

From memory he had a tool case set out much like a normal socket set.

It took the service manager about two goes before he had the right one. Didn't make a fuss, blamed it on the new guy even though I couldn't have proved it was lost at their premises.

Everyone should check that their lock nut key is still in place after every service (if they check brakes, tires etc).
