Diesel Engine failure
I have a 2012 X535D with 118,000 miles and the shop just got back with me saying it needs a new engine do to a rod knock

Are we talking a dealership shop or indy shop? How much do you trust the shop it's at? If you don't implicitly trust wherever it's at you may want to get a 2nd opinion.
I just had a dealer tell me I needed a $6k dpf replace. Had them reset the CEL & give me the car back. 3 weeks later & many 100s of miles & no repeat CEL (fingers crossed it stays that way).

I was 99% sure that’s what it was before taking it, just needed a second opinion, this is really the only shop I would take any of my cars to in Nashville for extensive work or tuning, been doing some research over the last couple months and have only found like three other people in the last 10 years that’s had an issue like this
