Valve seals in X5M

Hey guys. I install catalyst downpipe’s and now The vehicle is smoking a lot.I know the valve stem seals are unknown issue but how much would it cost to get it fixed any other remedies.

I have read that certain mechanics can do it with the engine on the vehicle. Now I’ve read and I’ve been getting quote to lower the engine vehicle to get the job done. is 3000 a high or a regular price to get this done

At this point you have nothing to lose. At-205 works quicker. Oil saver would be a maintainer after oil changes.
My old mdx had bad valve seals and rear main seals with 250k miles. Those 2 sealed it up.

Lots of great reviews if you searched especially on bmw’s.

Do what twin mentioned above and also check your CCV lines, a cracked CCV line or stuck or bad valve in them will cause excessive smoking, especially under boost conditions.

If ultimately however you have to do the valve stem seals, expect to pay 3 to 4 grand. It takes roughly 40 hours to do job and thus why it is so expensive, it can be done without pulling the engine but takes additional special tools to do this. It takes about the same amount of time to do either way, I recommend only doing without pulling the engine if you are going to do the work yourself and don't have access to a lift, otherwise this is the perfect time to to have your valves walnut blasted and cleaned as that will only add another hour or two of labor and it by itself requires removing the engine so again perfect time to do it.

Catch cans don’t help with bad valve stem seals. Oil is pulled directly into the combustion chamber by leaking around the valve seals.

At-205 helped significantly on my 4.8i with bad seals. Valve stem seals are not very common on the x5m. Not zero, but not guaranteed like the n63/n62.

How do you know your seals are bad? The general test is to fully warm your engine. Idle it for at least 5 minutes after fully warm. Then with a friend watching or backup camera on. Floor it and if you have smoke it’s bad seals.

There are a lot of other things as red neck mentions that can also cause smoking. The ccv is cheap.

If you bought it with bad seals, it’s possible it’s been this way a long time. With oil burning there is a high chance of carbon build up in the engine and engine damage too from oil, carbon and cylinder scoring. Fix it soon or dump it.
