I talked to the sales rep again. He told me that with no trade-in, my price out the door would be $67,508 which includes $599 doc fee, $2500 holiday cash and $3333 sales tax. The car has a $66475 MSRP.

He asked me if I wanted to do a trade-in with my '07 Yukon. I said possibly and let him know what my payoff is ($18,500) vs. what the KBB value on the car is ($19,500). He said that if they appraise it for at least the payoff amount, then the out-the-door price of the X5 will drop $950 to $66558. I think I'm going to push to get $65,500 out the door with my trade-in.

Thoughts?

So that makes it 63,576 for the car before fees, tax, and holiday cash. If that's right, that'd make the offer about $1500 over invoice.

I'm not sure about the trade in thing, but if I'm reading it right, that they give exactly what you owe on the car, then they'll drop the price another $950? That'd make your deal about $500 over invoice.

Sounds right. The trade-in value of $18-19k, even if payoff is that amount, is lowering the taxes on the vehicle by $900-950.

The dealer appraised it yesterday and said it is worth $18k in trade; payoff is $18,800. I'm going to squeeze him for the extra $800 off to make the deal happen.

I goy my car yesterday. I got 900 over invoice, 3500 eco, 2500 holiday and will get the 1800 tax credit on next years taxes. Got a 69,475 car for 56,900 after the 1800 factor. plus under section 179 tax rule I will be able to deduct a large portion of the sales price from my business income

Pics!

Also, if you don't mind me asking, how difficult was it to negotiate down to $900 over invoice? Reason I ask is that I'm going to finalize my negotiation tomorrow hopefully and am wondering how difficult a time I'm going to have. He is only taking the $2500 holiday cash off the sticker price (35i) with no other discounts, which is crazy. If I were to take his deal, the price of the car would be $63975. If I were to get the car for $900 over invoice, which according to everyone here is fair, the price of the car would be around $60250.

Am I expecting too much to think that I will be able to get him down $3700 from his current offer? I'm just really new to the negotiation process...

I used various dealers to compete for the price. Basically, I would tell the "other" dealer what they had to offer and ask if they'd beat it. It worked really well in my case since there are 5 dealers within a 40 minute drive from my place.

I dealt with several Internet salespeople and even a fleet manager through a broker. I kept getting matching or better bids after I shared the info between dealers. You can do much better than what you have.

There are a lot of factors involved. How many BMW dealers in your area? Its not that hard if you start your offer at $900 over invoice. The dealer (in this day and age) knows you know what invoice price is (at least they assume you do). You can negotiate down to that, but you're going to have to play tough.

If you aren't willing to walk away or go to another dealer, its going to be tough to get a deal. Tell them the other car you're looking at that's got a better deal, or the other dealer who will give you a better offer or even that you aren't comfortable with the numbers and need to think about it. Tell them anything that means that you are going to walk out that door because more often then not when that happens people don't walk back in. It takes between 30 - 45 days for the average BMW shopper to make a purchase.

If you are willing to pay 64K for it because you really really want it well...

Depends on what "doc fee" is. In my area, they lump the MACO, training, and their doc fees all in one. Training is $200, MACO $300, leaving them with $100 for "real" doc fees.

Thank you all very much for all the info; this is invaluable. The dealer keeps telling me that X5's are flying off the lots in the south and that just because cars are selling for a certain amount over invoice in certain areas doesn't mean cars are selling that cheap in Mississippi. Typical dealer BS.

I'm going to tell him that I've done plenty of research, I know what invoice is on my car, I know what MANY others have paid over invoice for their cars. I'm going to tell him that I'm getting a deal for $1000 over invoice via another dealer, that I want the car I ordered from him, but that I have no problem jumping ship and going with another dealership that can give me a better price.

Yes, the car will be here next week and I haven't worked out a deal with the dealership. Yes, he knows I want to buy the car by year-end to take advantage of the small business owner's tax incentive program. But all I would have to do if he didn't budge would be to work a deal with another dealership and buy the car before 12/31, although it would take a few more weeks to get my car. So in essence, he doesn't really have me over a barrel although he thinks he does. I'm going to set him straight tomorrow and let him know what I can do.

He keeps giving me the sob story of how he's commission based only with no salary, kids' photos and handprints on things on his desk, mouths to feed, etc. Please.

YayyY! According the BMWNA, my car went into production on Dec 8th at 11:35 AM with an estimated completion date of Dec 16th.

Does anyone know how accurate this estimate is?

I'm getting pretty antsy!

That sounds about right.

I ordered my car on 11/17 and am receiving it tomorrow 12/10, so three weeks and two days total wait. That's with a 2-day shipping delay and Thanksgiving. Not sure the start and end dates of production of the vehicle, but that is quick.

This is by far the longest day I've ever experienced, and it's only 10am. It might reach the dealer today, which is only subconsciously making me more anxious. ARRGGHHH!

I've been looking around for the past few weeks for any '11 X5's in my area, and I've only seen two (that's Mississippi for you), which is a great feeling. I love having something that isn't so common. My wife told me she thinks my Yukon makes me more manly and that she thought the X5 is a woman's car; I told her to bugger off!
