I liked the oil temperature gauge and high viscosity 60weight at the high 240 degree Farenhite information - takes a long time to get to temp and then takes a long time to get the temp down.

On my 235 with OEM pennzoil 5W30 it seems it takes 10 miles at normal driving rpm to get into the 90's Celsius, and then after a few high rpm runs the temps seems to stay around 111 Celsius, even slowing down when I think I'm getting cool air over the radiators and heat exchangers, the temps stay at 111-113 Celsius. All this regardless of ambient temps.

Nifty- Thanks for posting that.

Really pretty standard info, but nice to see it clearly & concisely presented considering how much info is in there. The GL4 vs GL5 has always been a pet peeve of mine (~11:00).

I always encourage getting UOA's to really learn what's going on- Blackstone Labs is a popular option but there are several. It's tough to beat a used oil analysis to learn what's really going on with your engine and the oil you're using.

I think it was interesting how he talked about changing the motor oil a few times(four or five times in one day) to flush out old sludge/varnish from a used car. I also do that over a few weeks - when ever I buy a used car with a semi unknown car history.

Interesting video, though it does sound like a Red Line commercial at times.

Probably a good thing, since it was a red line commercial
Still, covered a lot of details not often discussed in a clear manner- worth a few minutes to watch

Curious to know if you do this with a "cheap" oil or do you use full synthetic?

I ask this because my 328i has a good amount of sludge. I am the second owner of a car that has lived in Phoenix, Az all its life where there is a good amount of dust a in the air. I think the original owner stuck to recommended oil change intervals and this is what caused it not taking into account the amount of junk we have in the air here. I have a hard time keeping the engine bay looking decent so I can only imagine what the dust has done to the oil and engine.

I am also considering Auto-Rx but am hesitant putting anything besides oil in my car. Any suggestions? I can do all my own oil changes at home so I'm not concerned about labor.

Thanks for this post and any advice.

For the two e39 5er's I bought used... I used Mobil-1 0w40 European Blend oil. I changed the oil three times in three weeks. Then I changed the oil every 5K kms a few times before going to 10K kms intervals. On the first two oil changes... the oil looked dirty. So that's why I stopped at three oil changes.

I don't know about using those motor "flushes". I have heard of a few mechanic's adding a quart of ATF to the engine oil, though. Then they say to let it idle for 30 minutes or so. Or go for a very gentle drive(no hard starts or heavy engine loads) for a few miles. Then they change the engine oil - with just a good quality oil. I've never done this... but I have been temped to try it. IDK.
