Question Questions about X5M...

I want to ask some general questions about the X5M. As you can see in my sig, I've owned some nice sports cars, but the idea of a super SUV/SAV is something I haven't fully wrapped my head around. Aside from poor gas mileage, what can I expect from the X5M? How does it drive, handle, sound, etc...

Since I would be buying it sight unseen and I've never driven one, I don't want to buy it and then hate it soon after I get it.

Thanks

Its great, sound is okay I'm having the stock exhaust modded, power is great with the velos tune. gas mileage is not that bad on the high way I can 20 mpg not problem. space is great, great family car. I wouldn't have purchased a sport suv if I didn't need the room for a family. its my every day driver and I love getting in it each and every time. I test drove the SRT is was okay didn't do it for me. I like BMWs interface and NAV much better. I liked the BENZ ML63 AMG too be it was 20k more.

In a straight line it will leave your e92M for dead. On the track you will be surprised to find the x5m will out handle a stock e46m. It will out do an Audi RS4 on a track with comparable drivers as well for frame of reference. For an SUV it is just downright crazy what it can do, test drive one if you can. It masks its speed well, may not feel like your going fast but this thing hauls with launch control

First, is it an "M" or and "M-sport" ... big difference.

Do yourself a favor and drive either/or locally.

Expect "M" expenses to be 50% to 100% more than "M-sport" and non M-sport models once out of warranty ...

The thrill of driving the M (and it WILL be thrilling!) will be continuously off-set by the outrageous expenses.

Yea, I'm well aware of the maintenance expenses of M cars. I would extend the factory warranty to 100,000 and the previous owner bought the extended maintenance on it so I'm covered there.

Ok. I've narrowed my selection down to two different X5M's: Both are the same exact color and have the same exact options. Also, they are both 2013 non-CPO. The main difference is one has 10k miles and the other has 24k miles.

The one with more miles has a few scratches/chips in different areas on the exterior, but it does have the extended maintenance warranty until 2019 or 100,000 miles.

The one with least miles is flawless (no paint issues or scratches), but costs $5k more (before negotiating a discount).

Lastly, it will cost $800 more to ship the cheaper model via enclosed transport.

Which one would you get?

That's the part I'm struggling with; how long I plan to keep it. I normally don't keep sports cars for more than two years, but this is a utility vehicle first and sports car second. As far as resale, you could say that less miles is better, but you could also say that extended maintenance coverage is more valuable.

Very tough to decide

I was pretty skeptical coming from a long line of M3s. A couple years ago I bought a 3.8GT3RS, and recently decided to tow it to the tack instead of drive it. Not having enough garage space for a truck in addition to the M3, I started considering a fun SUV - mostly had my heart set on a '13 Cayenne Turbo or GTS. A good friend of mine got a chance to flog a X5M in spain at a private track, and bought one promptly when he got back home to Houston. I was pretty impressed by it. It out accelerates and out handles the Cayenne by a pretty wide margin. While not a nimble as the E90M3, it sticks just as well, and is quite a bit faster around town. Well, it is softer, rolls a bit more (but not a lot give 5300lbs), the steering is a bit vague, but so was the M3...BMW has lost the plot of steering feel these days, so I was not losing much. it's also the most luxurious vehicle I've owned, and with a JL Stealthbox, it's the best sounding as well (I had the same individual audio in the M3). Overall I am happy. Tows a 4500lb trailer very well too. I think it would probably out accelerate 95% of cars out there with a track car hanging behind it - at least surprise them. MPG is about 12 around town. 2 less than the E90M3.

Thanks for your impression of the X5M. However, I still need to know which one is a better deal; the one with less miles or the one with more miles and extended maintenance warranty.

Extended maintenance warranty is useless if the car cannot be driven due to a breakdown ...

Get the lowest mileage car, use up the factory warranty if you are only going to keep it for 2 years ...

If you are going to keep it beyond the expiration of the factory warranty, DO NOT buy unless you have CPO (and now is the time to get CPO because you can negotiate it as part of the price if it is being sold by a BMW dealer ... is it?)

Mine had 9K on it, no CPO, bought extended warranty for 7/100K from dealer.

With modern BMWs, lower mileage is better. They are very complex vehicles, and like model beach volleyball player, miles wear hard on them. After 50K expect some serious costs to pop up if you drive them properly.

How much does it cost to extend the vehicle warranty to 7/100?

See, that's just it ... Extended Vehicle Protection (EVP) plans are very expensive when purchased on a stand alone basis. Depending on the # of mo's and mileage purchased, they indeed retail somewhere between $4K and $8K.

CPO on the other hand, especially the 2014 CPO, now includes electronics and NAV (prior to 2014 that was NOT the case). If/when negotiated as part of a used car purchased and in order to seal the deal, a dealer is often willing to sell the CPO at cost (approx. $1,850). It does take time to run the car through the CPO check list, about 2 hrs, so you may be charged 2 hrs worth of labor.

A comparable EVP plan, called the Gold Plan (6yrs or 72 mo/100K mi) will retail in the mid $4K's. Some report that they have been able to get it for the mid $3K's by shopping nationwide. Even at the discounted price, it is still 2X the CPO price ... JFYI

The dealer that has the X5M I'm considering just told me they don't CPO M cars.

Interesting ... Is the dealer a BMW dealer?

You see, CPO is a warranty program that is underwritten by BMW USA. All a dealer has to do is put the car through the CPO check list (see attached). If/when it passes, BMW USA will warrant the car.

If the car is at a BMW dealer, you may want to call BMW USA in NJ and ask under what circumstances a dealer can deny CPO ... Keep us posted!

If the dealer is not a BMW dealer ... Caveat Emptor!

I'm interested in what these are really selling for as I need to sell mine to buy an Alpina B6.

'13 X5M with 9k miles: Carbon black/black/carbon leather trim, LEDs, comfort access, rear climate, soft close doors, high gloss roof rails, premium sound, HUD, gloss black grills, & I forget what else

3 sets of wheels: stock 20" 300M wheels and tires with less than 1,000 miles, BBS SAV 20's with brand new Conti DWS non-runflat, 19" 298M with Pirelli Scorpion Winters.

It's currently on lease with BMW FS until 12/31/15 but I'd pay it off and sell. Not many around so tough to know what these are bringing

Yes, it's a BMW dealer, which is why it was so odd to hear that. Oh well. I guess they don't have to do CPO on M cars if they don't want to. Or, maybe they don't want to do it for this particular vehicle.

Manheim auctions control all pricing ... having said that, these M cars are so rare that there just isn't enough data out there for 2013 (see attached).

Dealer retail "asking" price would be in the range of $78K ... actual selling price probably in the low to mid 70's.

What is your lease residual?
