X5M clicking sound from engine

The engine in my X5M makes a clicking sound at idle and can be heard on normal driving. Once at WOT it cannot be heard. When I open the hood the sound is clear and comes from the valve cover area on both sides.

Also, there is no loss of power, or codes. Been to the dealer and they have never commented. I never asked about it either.

Does anyone here who owns an X5M or X6M have any thoughts?
Is this the loud injector thing, some folks were mentioning?

Probably just the injectors. The injectors in these cars and other BMW's are very clicky and loud.

This is what ive heard as well. Although I guess there is a distinctive noise if your timing chain is going. But that isnt until 65k+ miles on the truck.

Record and post it. I had the timing chain replaced on mine. Made the noise from 40 thousand miles at least. Once the timing chain was replaced the noise went away and the vehicle feels like it has gained 100hp, which makes sense if a slack timing chain is putting the cam shaft out of position.

I can tell you if it is the timing chain noise.

Hi guys, thanks for the reply. It really does seem to come from the surface of the engine and not inside the engine. So, it well could be the injectors then, as you state.

The timing chain is probably fine in my car, it has 39k miles, and I rarely drive it fast. In fact, I should have gotten a diesel LOL.

the timing chain is a 8K fix. I wouldn't mess around with it. Is it slightly louder when warm? If you are under warranty, I would do everything in my power to get this taken care of before 50K.

It is louder at idle and after the car warms up it is better and eventually inaudible.

I will record it and post it.

Thanks!!

Sounds normal to me. I think the majority of our M's do this. My co workers comment on mine after start up, sounds poopy and like a snake rattler until warm up if that's what your referring too.

Did not get a chance to record a video yet. However, I found this one online of a new X5M review. The sound as the reviewer pops the hood sounds pretty much as clicky as the one on my car.

So, probably it is the injector sound. I will take it to the dealer this week to make sure nothing else is up. I'll keep the thread posted if there is any negative news.

[QUOTE=Jimshorts;16497332]here is mine yesterday

Hi Jimshorts,

Thanks for posting this video. Yes, mine sounds similar, like a very loud swiss watch in slow motion.

I will also record mine, as this will help confirm. It always sounded to me like valves tapping... and I initially thought, do these cars have loud valve taps?

Now it seems like it is the injector sound, most likely.

That's my guess. My truck has always been that loud. I talked to my tech adviser yesterday and we agreed im due for new injectors and possibly plugs and or coils. If your truck ever kicks a cam shaft sensor warning then its the timing chain. He doesnt believe I have any of the symptoms of that yet.

Thanks for posting on this tread guys, I was looking for feedback on same noise. I was worried my truck had something like the VANOS on other M Cars that goes bad.
It sort of sounds like a diesel engine at times too.

Not sure about X5M but in other vehicles low oil can make the sound even if the vehicle is not indicating low oil.

Noise

I got great news for you -- they all sound like that
I owed several e39 m5s and they did slightly

I now have 2011 x5m. - heard same ticking noiceppse - went to BMW - service rep came out for 5 seconds , smiled and said that's how's their supposed to sound!

If u think I'm wrong drive into a BMW dealer and simple ask a mechanic that knows the M cars to listen and he lol say what I just did!

Crazy to hear a slight tick from 100k car but oh well - I love mine and it's fast as he!! I'd suggest looking into getting a tune from Volos ads like 100 hp for about $2100

Hope this helps,

The ticking was the first thing I noticed when I drove the car off the lot...It's CPO from BMW so wasn't worried, figured it was just the lifters; my E46 M3 had similar (but not as loud) noise.

Normal. It's your lifters not injectors. I agree, it sounds like what a Swiss watch would sound like if you put a blow horn to it!

The same was with me, low oil level did not how up at the gauge panel, and I heared that clicking sound... Luckily I checked the level manually and filled it up... Then googled the problem, and it appeared quite a typical issue on those 2012 X5s..

Hi, my 2012 x6m has the same clapping sound. Hear the video below. What is it then? It cannot be the valves or injectors as the sound does not accelearate when revving the engine. Also it is much lower tone.

Does the sound change pitch with the engine speed?

If not check out the purge valve for the charcoal canister. Unplug it see what happens. I had a similar problem. I let the dealer fix it for $400 but in retrospect it's easy to get at and only a $85 part.

edit: the dropbox link and the youtube, sound normalish. I have a 50i not M but it's pretty similar.

It depends on how loud it is. I had a 2010 X5M that ticked very loudly. It was most noticeable when engine braking in sport mode coming to a stop. You could hear the clacking over the radio. At WOT, it wasn't noticeable.

My service advisor told me the lead tech said the clicking was normal, so I asked him to come listen to it and as soon as he walked out to hear it, he immediately realized it was far louder than it should be.

First time around, it was 3 collapsed lifters. 3-4 months later, another collapsed lifter and 6 months later, 2 more collapsed lifters (including 1 that had already been replaced). At that point, BMW recommended replacing the heads as the next step and my aftermarket warranty refused unless BMW could identify the fault with the head. My only option was fronting ~$4000 for the teardown with no guarantee it would be covered unless they could find a definitive cause. Maxcare (Carmax warranty) also wanted BMW to warranty the whole repair under 24mo warranty on repairs (duplicate lifter failure) and BMW refused saying the lifters were the symptom of failed heads not the cause. I ended up getting Maxcare to cover all the labor costs and 1 of the lifters for the final repair and paid BMW $30 to cover the 2nd lifter, but they refused to cover any future repairs to any camshaft/valve components unless I agreed to the potentially uncovered diagnostic work.

All told, that car was in the shop for 3mo out of the 24 I owned it and had $18,000 in repairs that were covered almost entirely by the $2700 Maxcare warranty. As soon as it was fixed, I traded it into Carmax for a 2013 X6M. They must have auctioned it, since it showed up a local used car lot. The best part was getting $1650 back on the prorated Maxcare warranty, since they prorate based on time and mileage, not covered expenses.
