Powder Coating Stock Rims
Anyone have suggestion on powder coating stock oem wheels? Were to buy paint, brand type, amount, etc. what kind of prep work is needed besides cleaning? I have the 18 inch stocks i use with snow tires from November through April but hate the look from aftermarket back to stock.

Well if you're talking about power coating the rims, that's not really a diy project. It requires equipment that the normal guy doesn't have. You can google for a shop that does coating in your area, maybe check yelp for reviews.

You might also try looking for one of those mobile wheel repair companies. They'd be able to take care of you I'm sure. There are some home/hobbyist powder coating kits you can get out there and it's not all that expensive but the biggest issue for most of us is having a way to bake the finish on once you have it coated. You can get a regular kitchen oven for the garage if you do this sort of thing very often, but I'm not sure you could get even a single X5 wheel inside a standard sized kitchen oven. I've seen people go crazy powder coating all kinds of small stuff in their engine bays this way though.

Powder coating is a DIY job... For small items. The tooling is very cheap! $50 for a Craftsman powder gun, and a small toaster oven.
The problem with wheels, is their size, and importance of being balanced. I should show you the wheel weights on a set of wheels I have had powdered already... A few ounces here and there and uneven distribution, can have a significant issue with wheel balancing. Leave it to a pro, let them sandblast, coat, and if you have issues, send it back. |

Just an FYI, here in the midwest (Iowa) the going rate for a set of four 18"-20" wheels sandblasted then powder coated is $250.00 out the door. Body shop wanted $600.00 to prep and paint. Your prices may vary!

In SoCal, it was uber cheap, since coaters were a dime a dozen. But there are also a lot of shady places that don't always adhere to CARB and EPA regs...

If your looking for a DIY, try autodip peelable paint. I've done the plastidip a few times, it's easy. The auto dip product looks to be a bit more durable and more what I'm looking for. But the process is the same.
