Warranty Issue After Tune?

Hey, im just wondering if anybody has had any issues with warranty after a tune was done? Like bringing it in to the dealer for any updates or anything like that?

Yeah just asking cause i had to bring my M into the dealership this morning cause it was shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd and the tech and told me they have to scan the system and probably do update since it didn't have one since 2013. He mentioned that when they scan for issues it will show things that might have triggered the car to malfunction.

Who did your tune and what did they do about it after it was nuked?

If your modification causes a problem to an otherwise covered part/system, the manufacturer has a right to deny the claim. If, however, you "undo" the modification and bring it back with the same problem, the manufacturer should honor the claim.

What if my truck is out of factory warranty but I have 3rd party warranty and need some work done? Once a BMW tech starts my X5M he will know it's modded... it's very loud. I don't plan on unloading the tune etc. I know tuned cars will always throw some type of ghost code even if you unload your tune...My old 335 threw a ghost code but they couldn't prove anything

It's a Cobb Accessport, I can re-apply tune on my own. The coding, though I'm SOL. I'll have to pay some $100+ to get all the options re-applied.

As long as your tune didn't cause the problem, even a 3rd party warranty claim should be honored. However, there may be exclusions in the warranty's fine print.

I am concerned as well. How does BMW service not know the software has been altered?

Because they are not looking for it typically. If you're going in for service for general maintenance, not an issue. Blow your motor, they will be looking for a root-cause. And frankly a tune of any kind even Dinan could be the culprit.

If this is a concern for you, then don't mod your car. The old adage comes to play here.... If you wanna play you gotta pay. Mod your car, and it breaks, and said mod is at fault, it's not BMW's fault is it?

Modding sounds cool, but be ready for any consequences that may arise. It could be increased maintenance, increased wear, local and state ordinances you're breaking. Deal with it.

They are able to see everytime you put a tune in or take it out. My tech showed me when I was bringing it in. When you put a tune it every warning goes off in the truck it scared the shit out of me the first time i did it. But it is logged in the truck every time. They know it depends if they are cool with you or not. They honored my warranty right up to the end when they blatantly told me they didnt want to fix my engine and to sell my truck.
