Question HUD Retrofit?

Hi All!

Found these forums a couple months back while researching the purchase of an X5! They were great when I was trying to make my purchase decision and back in August I had pre-ordered a 2010 X5 35d... since they worked back then I figured they X5 comunity out there might be able to help me again!

The X5 order was placed prior to the 2010 options list being released (based on 2009 information) so I knew things might change. I ordered everything but Third Row Seats & Running Board and also instructed the dealer to order it with HUD if it was available.

Well my X5 arrived exactly as ordered, minus HUD The dealers solution was to re-order the vehicle, and in 8 - 10 weeks I could get the car as I wanted it. Fair enough, but they weren't willing honour the agreed to trade-in of my 2006 325i in 8 weeks! and I really didn't want to wait. Very frustrating! Needless to say, I took home (about a month ago) and have absolutely loved it... the torque is amazing... but I still wish it had HUD.

I've been doing some reading about the possibility of retrofitting it with HUD, including some of the other thread on xbimmers. Everything seems to suggest that this modification/retrofit is more a cost issue than a technical issue and I'm looking for a little guidance. YES, I realize that I would have been, and still might be, better off re-ordering, but I like a challenge... that and the difference in trade-values proposed at the time was huge, like $4000 huge.

So.... is it possible? I'd love to hear from someone with more technical BMW experience. Here are the parts I think I'm going to need:

BMW Heads Up Display Projector (P/N 63 30 9 180 657)
BMW Heads Up Display Sound Insulation (P/N 62 30 9 128 267)
BMW Dashboard Trim Panel (P/N 51 45 6 974 555)
BMW Dashboard Heads Up Display Trim Piece (P/N 51 45 6 967 483)
BMW Dashboard Heads Up Display Frame (P/N 51 45 6 953 911)
BMW Windscreen w/ HUD Support (P/N 51 31 7 211 910)
BMW Light Control Element (P/N 61 31 9 134 729)

According to the BMW parts guides (like the one found at bmwfans.info) there is only one main wiring harness (which includes all instruments) for all X5s, so I've made the assumption that all the pre-wiring should be in place. The parts aren't going to be cheap so I'm hoping to save some cash by modifying my original Dashboard Trim Panel. I will also probably have to have BMW preform a software update/upgrade to have iDrive detect the new hardware.

Am I missing something? Can this be done? Has anyone tried it?

Looking forward to hearing peoples response!

Can't be done.

Besides, HUD ain't all that.

To replace HUD you would need

1. new winshield
2. New dash board
3. HUD parts
4. iDrive programmed

I would say $10k easy. The dash trim is the trim piece for dashes with a HUD cutout already.
