Bulldog, if you have a 2012 35i, open the gas tank door and read the white lettering. It says 89 octane

If it is 89 oct, then there is 40 cents difference between 89 and diesel where i live. That in itself will negate the mpg difference between the two.

You have to seek...
In my city, at different gas stations, I can find Diesel less then regular gas and more then premium gas on the same day.

Use the gasbuddy app

Confirmed. My 2012 X5 N55 gas cap says the min is 89. However, my 2011 535i says the min is 91. I run 93 on both cars, I'm not taking chances of any knocking or pre-detonation.

I have been using the app for sometime now. It seems the most it fluctuate is between 30 and 40 cents. When I travel to NE, I try the app to what the difference is, it is generally 10 cents higher than 93 oct.

Anyways, I have 2010 x5 3.0 and get on an average 14 - 15 mpg and I have always filled it up with 93. I am looking forward to my 2012 diesel as it will be fun to drive.

If you do the math.... At your average 14.5 mpg, and 12k miles per year at $3.60/gal. That is $2979.00 per year.

If you assume the diesel will average 18.5 mpg, which I think is conservative, and at 12k miles per year and $4.00/gal, you would pay $2594.00.

The diesel would have to average 16.1 mpg, for the costs to be equal.

It all depends on the WAY that you drive. If you like & USE the pedal on the right often reving above 4K RPMs, you are probably going to average under 20MPG. If you live in a city and only commute 5 miles a day and average under 15MPH on that trip (lots of stop & go), you might also average under 20MPG. However, if your average speed is more "typical" and shows around 30MPH (or higher) it would mean that you have a good mix of city & highway driving and by not revving over 3K RPMs, you should be able to average more like 24MPG with a new diesel. If you drive almost exclusively on the interstate (e.g. avg MPH is above 45) then some are reporting getting up to 26MPG. There are some who "claim" to be getting 29 & 30 MPG on exclusively interstate trips on flat terrain but IMHO you can take those with a grain of salt as most of those posts appear to be people trying to "brag" and anytime you see that, you HAVE to be suspect. My recommendation is that you use something more common as a point of calculation (like 22MPG) as that appears to be a level that almost everybody can obtain on these vehicles (look on independent sites like Fuelly for their averages).

In my area, Diesel was about 5 cents CHEAPER than the premium I use to run. Then we had these recent (last 2 months) of reduced gasoline prices and diesel in this area is now actually about 20 cents more than premium ($3.77/gal vs. $3.57/gal) so there will be annual (& even daily) fluctuations in those differences.

The difference using ~24MPG for the Diesel & your figures for an average of 12K miles/year is 827.5 gallons vs. 500 gallons ($1,885 vs. $2,979) so purely calculating fuel savings is more likely over a thousand a year. The REAL benefits to Diesel come in other areas like more towing power & better performance when going up mountain roads due to the huge torque advantage the diesel has over the petrol variants of these vehicles. Pair that with the CRAZY discounts that can place the cost of the Diesel versions LOWER than that of the gasoline versions and it seems like a no-brainier for some of us

I agree with the mathematical differences between the 2 fuel types. My commute and driving style will not change with the diesel. So, I will come out ahead if the prices stay within 30 to 40 cents of petrol. I do recall that over summer the difference was 10 to 15 cents.

I bought the diesel for not only the mpg, but it will be fun vehicle to drive. I got the options that I wish I had in my 2010 petrol, such as active drive, muti-contour seats and HUD. Plus, to me the 2011 and newer X5 drove a little better and could be due to the changes made in 2011 model year. This could just be me.

My SAV is build and should be at the dealer this week. Can't wait to take delivery.

What is your average mpg and how much hwy driving do you do? I average around 20.5mpg with 70% hwy.

I found this thread: http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...ight=x5+diesel
I'm averaging 21.7 mpg with 60/40 city/hwy post emissions system recall fix. Prior to that and for about 35k miles I averaged 23.8 with the same driving mix.

Our x5 diesel is my wife's daily driver. The gas mileage is great, especially for the long road trips. However, I wouldn't be able to drive it everyday because I can't stand the diesel engine noise.

I picked mine up yesterday. The diesel sound is a bit noticeable when idling, but goes away pretty quickly. To be honest, the only time I hear it is when the radio is off and I am seeking out for that diesel . Meaning, if I pay no attention, it will not bother me.

The true test will be when we take a family trip and my wife is sitting in the front passenger seat with the radio off... All she wants to do is talk - at normal volume and not raise her voice over the diesel growl.

It is my first diesel, so lets see how it grows on me.

Just bought an X5 35d for my wife. She's getting 30 mpg in mostly rural/highway driving. Torque is great. A bit of clatter at idle, but overall I don't find the noise objectionable.

just to chime in from traffic-heavy LA, we're consistently getting 19/28 with +/- 1 mpg with front/rear AC on.

That's pretty great for a mid-size SUV, hell my m3 gets 19 city if i baby it and don't use AC, haha.

Towed just over 6100lb from Edmonton, AB to Houma, LA with several stops at various cities in between. In total 4918km and driving at the speed limit. Used 2 gallons of DEF and averaged 23.1mpg (thats a 4.54l gallon). Love my X5d.

For me I get 18.2 mpg on my X5d driving 10 miles to work round trip. I use surface streets where there are alot of stop lights.
I only have 480 miles on the odometer.

Congrats!!

LOVED my 011 35d - wish I still had it

Wife just picked-up 013 35i and I gotta say I'd have a hard time choosing between the two now...She's getting about the same MPG with just a few hundred miles on it as I'm getting on my 4 banger N20 this winter..

Go figure? But I drive the N20 in sport mode all the time - and it will pick-up some mpg when the weather warms

Enjoy the diesel - it's an awesome motor too!!

+1.
I once got 30mpg over 15 miles of distance in my diesel, but what does it say? Nothing. True mpg is by averaging whole tank. For that particular trip (mostly highway), mpg came out to 25.5.

1,500 miles ODO, 23MPG average, 60/40 hwy/city. I pretty much get sticker MPG's @ 22 city / 28 hwy. love the torque, don't mind the cold clatter, had people walk up to me 'sir - that's diesel!' upon the second fill up. Lol
