P0456 code and fuel nozzle keeps shutting off
Hey guys, my girlfriend has a 2012 X5 xdrive50i with about 78k miles and only about 1000 miles on the engine (replaced under N63 class action lawsuit).
The car keeps getting a P0456 code ("Evaporative Emissions System Leak Detected, very small leak") and it is a real PITA to fill up the fuel tank seeing that it shuts off every 15 seconds unless I pour the fuel very slowly. Today she also called me saying that she got a "tighten fuel cap" warning message on the iDrive screen as well. I'm assuming all of these issues are related, so with that in mind is there a common failure point on these cars in the evap system that I should start looking at? I'm a bit unsure as to where to even begin to fix this issue. I figured it may be worth mentioning that there is usually a big "whoosh" whenever the gas cap is opened; indicated that the fuel tank isn't properly venting (I think). Perhaps an issue with the vent tube by the filler? I appreciate the help guys! Last edited by artfil91; 06-18-2020 at 01:18 PM.. |

I don't recall the code, but had similar experiences with my 2011 X5M. Attempted solutions went from cheap to more expensive until we solved the problem: tighten cap and clear code; replace the cap with a new OE cap; replaced both evap solenoids/ lines. My code was more specific than that "Evap leak detected" one you mentioned- pointing directly to that final part I paid to have replaced. Easy to fuel up after that. It was a long slog of auto shut-offs each time I was buying gas until then...not counting the persistent CEL/SES indicator light on the display. Good luck!
