You will NOT want to run winters in the summer. It will have the same effect as using summers in the winter. They will not be good.

You'll be best served getting a set of 298M wheels with dedicated winter tires. Any temps below 40F consistently or any snow flying will not be good with summer tires.

Keep your summer wheels clean (no salt) and you'll get twice the wear out of the summer tires! People are probably changing tires now in parts of the US so you may find good deals such as those listed. I'm not changing for a while!

I've been running 315/35 R 275/45 F pirelli scorpion ice/snow on 300m wheels for the last three winters. Its handled absolutely everything michigan could throw at it without breaking a sweat. Highly recommend that setup and keeping a summer/winter set handy instead of using an A/S tire. You'll be able to get the full performance benefits of the car in any climate by doing so

Despite success stories with a size 315 winter tire, I'm just too nervous to run that size. I live and drive all over upstate NY where you can have all 4 seasons in one day, and lake effect storms can drop a foot of snow in a couple hours. I am on the road constantly, and need a winter set up that can handle anything. I went with a square set up of 20" x 10" Ace Convex wheels shod with 275/40/20 Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded snow tires. The weight of the X5M, the X drive, and these studded snow and ice eating monsters makes this the best winter vehicle I have ever driven by a long shot. When I bought the M, it came with a set of 19" Pirellis on the tire rack wheels, and I was very disappointed in their performance. Very underwhelming for a dedicated winter tire. Plus, I wasn't a big fan of how they looked.

I ordered the wheels in a square setup with a 74.1 mm bore and 35 offset, so they are hubcentric in the front but need a ring in the rear. I did this so I can rotate the wheels, and so that if I decide to sell them they will fit on all X5's and X6's. In the attached pictures, I have a 25 mm spacer in the rear, but it still looks a little tucked with only 10" wheels. I am awaiting delivery of a custom 40mm spacer that will be hubcentric to the smaller rear hubs on the M and hubcentric to the wheel.

Buying the winter tires and installing on my stock 300M wheels was my excuse to find new wheels (summer only) for the X5M. I'm going to re-install the OEM RFTs since I probably have another 2 seasons to get out of them.

I think the best set-up would be 19" 298 M's with Hakka's - but what you have sure looks better! I too needed something bullet proof in Montana so went with square 19" with 255/50x19 Scorpion Winters. When I wear them out I'll spring for the Hakka's - THE BEST winter tire, hands down.

I like the square 255/50/19 setup also. Some spacers in the rear make it look pretty good in my opinion. The BMW setup comes with Good Year Ultragrips. Can't wait to change to non runflat Hakkas or something. Working for now but they are better at high speed than the blizzaks I had previously. I'll lean to more snow performance on the next set.

The biggest downside with going with the BMW wheels is the price. My complete (wheels & tires) set-up cost less han just the BMW wheels.

Price on OEM wheels is ridiculous. They are cast wheels, but they charge like they are forged.

I thought the 255/50/19 wheel looked way out of place on my M - just way too narrow, especially on the rear. Even with a 25mm spacer it was extrememly tucked. The 275/40/20 set up fits the vehicle much, much better. I just couldn't drive around on ridiculous looking wheels and tires 5 months of the year.

Nokians are the best winter wheels I have driven on, and the studded Hakkas are simply amazing. But they are maximized for handling winter weather and keeping you on the road, not performance. There are all kinds of winter tires, and they all are designed for a particular purpose. Match your purpose with a tire designed for that purpose and you will be happy. I don't have the luxury of staying home when weather gets bad, so for me, a tire designed to handle anything at the expense of performance serves me well.

Yes, agree with you. For my purposes, the 298M wheels with the Good Years are working fine, as this isn't a daily driver. And, with the X drive there isn't too much that will stop this for even the most novice of drivers (of which I am not). The price of the 298M set is crazy, but as I pointed out to the OP, there is a set for sale on eBay for $1750 which is not a bad price. I happened to find mine with 3 months usage for $1000!!! A set of spacers and I was off. I'll take the slightly narrow look and find something else to do with the extra cash.

But, all things being said, your setup is very nice. And my set is on 5 months also so I definitely need something safe that will also look good going by everyone else!

It's all a matter of personal preference. The M's ass and is just so wide - I think it make the 19's stand out more, and the fender flares are also the widest of the X5's, so it looks more tucked on the M than it does on other models.

How is the ride comfort and noise level with the studs? I'm considering getting those tires for my next set since I live in an extremely hilly area with a river along the highway that creates icy conditions on my commute.

The ride is great! A little bit of humming from the studs at highway speeds, but nothing ridiculous at all. The cabin on X5's are so well insulated that not much gets through.

Great pics upstate! Especially your brake calipers! Thank you everyone for sharing! Upstate, do you plan on keeping your X5M for a long time? Just curious I am debating buying into an X5M for the long haul. Thank you!

Did you do the trailer hitch yourself? I thought that they have to cut into the bumper?

Thanks! Yes I plan on keeping it for awhile, unless I get the sense that something is going seriously wrong in which case I will ditch it. The idiot I bought it from installed a trailer hitch with no electrical for his bike carrier. Yes, he had to cut into the valance just a little to do it. I used it to beat him up on the price. I will be installing the BMW tow kit with electrical hookup for my boat anyway, so I will be cutting a bigger hole.

Great info here on the subject. I've been looking for answers on this exact question. Seems like a few options one can go with.

Two questions:

1) What does "square" setup mean?

2) With all the winter to summer back to winter changes in tire sizes, rims, spacers, etc does one have to adjust alignment for the different sizes or widths or does it all work fine with the setups spec'd here in the thread.
