Bumping this thread….
I've seen some 2012's (both 35i & 50i, non-M Sport) with paddles - where these a standalone option? I've checked the BMW North America spec sheet for the 2012 model year and I don't see any mention of paddles but I'm seeing them on 2012 models (though they're quite rare)…does anyone know?? |

I just ran the VINs on 2 different 2012's that both have paddle shifters, one a 35i and the other at 50i, and neither have Adaptive Drive. I do see the option listed though on both vehicles - S2XAA SPORT-LEDERLENK. MIT SCHALTWIPPEN Sport steering wheel with shift paddles Hopefully someone here knows….though I'll keep looking. It appears to be a standalone option, and one that rarely got selected. |

I have a 2011 X5 50i M Sport. It did not come with the paddle shifters but did come with the M sport steering wheel. I bought a new M steering wheel with the paddle shifter. It was a direct swap and the paddle shifters work

Does yours have adaptive drive? I'd love to have the paddles, but can't quite get a bead on what combination is just plug and play.

My X5M has paddle shifters and I might use them 2x/year. They are fairly useless, I guess if I made a point to use them everyday I would get used of them and use them more?? It's not something I would spend money to add after the fact though.

The fact that I don't drive like that all the time is probably the reason why I have to use the paddles - due to the adaptive nature of the vehicle, it has adapted to the way I normally drive - which isn't super aggressive.

Yes I have axaptive drive. I really missed them when I replaced my 2008 M5 with the X5. I also installed the BMS stage 2 piggyback tune. Huge difference in power and respnse. I do not miss the M5... |

I had paddle shifters on my 2010 535i sports package and like the poster Sylvan Lake V35, I tried to use it as often as possible but it wasn't very intuitive to use.
One of the flaws in using the shifter is when your making a turn on your steering wheel the shifters are also turning with the wheel.. So it makes it difficult to use during a turn to shift down.. Another reason I didn't use it was because the SAT ( Sports Auto Transmission ) in Sport mode ( sport button pressed ) shifted quicker than I could ever shift manually. The actual shifter would be better to use... keeping left hand on the wheel and the right hand on the shifter... Versus both hands on the steering wheel and trying gear through different gears whilst trying to turn... This link http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=899019 shows where some people here who have replaced the Msport wheel with the paddle shifter to just plug and play as long as the X5 was equipped with sports package. Honestly based on my experience, the paddle shifters were just a short term novelty and a conversation piece starter... |

Everyone has there preferences. I prefer using the paddles during spirited driving. For me the paddles are an awesome upgrade. I usually shift before making a steering correction so the stationary paddles work just fine for me.

I might use mine more if I got out carving corners, most of my "aggressive driving" is stop light to stop light so I use my launch control a lot....
Like someone said it's personal preference, if I didn't have them I wouldn't go out of my way to get them retro fitted...but we also want things we don't have...so I would likely be in the same boat looking for a way to make them work.

You can do that with the non-Ms too, so really you have a whole crap-load of ways you can shift these things if you have the paddles.

Certainly in a stop light setting the paddles would be nice on a 50i - the tranny holds all the way to redline before shifting, which is cool, but the N63 runs out of steam before redline, and I'm guessing the S63 does not. I will be manually upshifting before I hit redline when I'm having fun, that's a certainty. |
