Does the x5"basic" come with the universal garage remote? is there anyway to get it w/o spending $3,000 on the "convenience package"?

If its like the system that us in the X3, you can get the dealer to install just the garage door opener which is what I did.

Yes. Homelink makes the opener for BMW and they sell aftermarket models to a company called MITO (800-433-6486). If you are a DIY type person you might be able to buy one and install it yourself. I did it on a an 04 325.
Otherwise, go to a dealer or an auto hi fi shop to get it installed.
I suggest you call MITO and find out whats involved in the installation process. You should also do a Google search. I bet someone has already done this and put it on Youtube.
Good luck.

A better question is how do you get it to work with your existing garage door? This is my 3rd BMW and I've never been able to get it to work. My Porsche was a snap and the Mercedes' before that quite easy. But even with calling Homelink for troubleshooting I can't get it to work.

hold the remove up or 1/2 away from mirror. Press the button on remote and the one you want it to learn at the exact same time, or the one on the mirror just a tiny bit before the remote.

once the light goes from blinking slow to blinking fast release both.

Walk up to the garage door opener and hit the learn button on the motor.
hurry up to your car and hit the button you just programmed, the light on the garage door opener will go from slowly flashing to on. hit the button again, the light will go off.

you're programmed.

There also are types of garage doors with which homelink will not work.
