Spare tire/ no spare tire what's up ?

I've noticed that when I see some pictures of X6's trunk/boot with the lid raise some have spare tires others have a storage area. My x6 has spare tire there even though I have RFs all around. So is this another one of the those US vs non-US things ?

All U.S. models get a spare tire.

Not sure about overseas markets.

You get a spare in Australia, but yes I've seen those photos with the storage in place of the spare.

It raises the question: why do we still have spare tires in cars? When was the last time you had a flat? Why not carry a spare fan belt? spare battery? Or, in the case of BMWs, a spare electronic diagnostic kit, since that seems to be the #1 reason why BMWs get disabled these days.

I think the spare wheel will go the way of the dip stick.

We never get spare tyres for BMW's with RF Tyres in the UK. Nice space for some gear under the floor though.

It is a market dependent option. Canada for example has the RF tires and NO spare tire. For some strange reason, the US still includes a spare tire. IMO it doesn't make sense to lug around a spare tire if you have RF tires. It defeats the purpose of having RF tires in the first place! It also adds additional weight to the car which in the end reduces your mpg ratio. Without the spare tire, you get additional storage space which is always nice.

Having a spare gives you the option of not running run flats plus the piece of mind should a run flat get restroyed on a trip in the middle of no where.

Also a spare come sin handy when you get a flat and no new tire is available for several days.

BMW reversed coursed and is now offering spares on the X5/6 and 5 series even when run flats are installed. The X5 only gets a spare if the 3rd row seat is not installed. I suspect they di this when they heard complaints from customers and found out many tire shops won't even patch a run flat.

I would rather have a spare so the run flat can sit in the back until it can be repaired. Saves me from spending $500 for a tire I destroyed because I drove on it flat.

When my tire are bald , you can bet I will go with normal tires.
