Really Need Some Help - Used X5 or No???
I want to buy a used luxury SUV in the 2012-2014 years since my price range is about $25K for a used vehicle. We are empty nesters and I just need a 5 passenger SUV, no 3rd seat is needed.
I was thinking hard about a X5 but after studying on this site, I think I am scared to purchase a used X5 that is out of warranty. I am seeing stories on here where people would never purchase a BMW X5 unless it was a CPO with an extended warranty or the buyer risks going broke. Why are BMWs so unreliable and expensive to repair?? I really want a NICE leather luxury interior SUV. But I want reliability. I have been going back and forth between the following: Acura RDX Lexus RX 350 Cadillac SRX Lincoln MKX Audi Q5 Any recommendations from your experience are really appreciated on model and year. Thank you! |

I guess the Acura might be the best option from a reliability standpoint but it just isn't as nice on the interior as other options. |

i was in the same boat.... i did look all and ended up on 2012 x5 sport activity with m package..i just bought extended warranty to have a peace of mind..i like it a lot and didnt regret it...bmw is still diff...end of the day its bmw and good high end lux..but thats my opinion..if you ended up buying any of those, make sure to go to that specific brand car dealer...if bmw then go buy it from bmw dealership as they do test the car and make sure it pass tot heir standard..you may pay a bit more but hey atleast you know it passed bmw standard....

If reliability is what you treasure most, there's probably better brands. But I would probably differentiate reliability and cost of repairs. My X5 50i has been very reliable over the years, but the few times repairs have come up, they are quite expensive. So you might look at both those factors independently?
You mention leather/luxury SUV...I love my X5 but the interior is basically a 2007 design, it's still considered luxury I suppose, but there is nicer stuff out there, though you do have a budget. Keep in mind, the E70 model is 2007-2013, the F15 is 2014+. You mentioned 2012-2014, so if you want newer/more modern, the 2014 looks entirely different inside/out, but doubt you'll find a decent one for 25K. I rate fun to drive and performance ahead of reliability, that's why I drive an X5 50i. If reliability/cost of ownership was most important, an X5 probably isn't the best choice on the market. |

The most reliable out of your list obviously if vehicle is already in somewhat good condition would be the Lexus RX then the Acura RDX and so forth so on. Should also consider MDX and infiniti QX70/FX.
Since this is a BMW forum the responses might be mixed so i will just give you my experience. I have a 2013 X5 6 cylinder CPO that i purchased December 2016 it had 44,000 miles when i got it and now has 54,000 miles. I have had it in the shop 4-5 times. In the first 3 months non major issues. Had the weather seal around the sunroof replaced under factory warranty. Had the rear passenger door weather seal replaced under factory warranty due to water build up in the door. My OIL FILTER HOUSING GASKET replaced because i reported that i seen smoke coming from engine bay when parked after driving, covered under factory warranty. They also replace my leather seat due to some wear and tear under factory warranty. Major problems in the first 3 months. I was headed out to do my usual running around and got an ENGINE MALFUNCTION light took it in and they said they needed to replace the eccentric shaft and most the components associated with it. 3 months after that OVERHEATING light came on, we all know what what was, WATER PUMP went had to be towed covered by warranty. While car was in the care of the dealer i was alerted the thrust bushings and control arm links needed to be replaced out of pocket. Also advised them about a strange noise coming from under car and they said they needed to replace the MUFFLER under warranty. 3 months after that which is now, ENGINE MALFUNCTION light came on when headed home. Turned out to be the TURBO PRESSURE SENSOR covered under warranty. With that said if i didn't dish out a down payment just last year this car would be gone right now. I was willing to give it it's fair chance as it is a used car and who knows what the person before me did or didn't do while they had the vehicle but at this point i am for certain i am eventually getting rid of it. The vehicle has warranty until July 2019, it might make it to the end of 2018 before i trade it in unless i just have more major issues or decide to keep it to the very end of the warranty. Truth is if i was not upside down on the loan i might have traded it in now. Total cost of just Eccentric shaft work, water pump , Muffler and Turbo pressure sensor $5,800 not out of my pocket but if it was not warrantied then you get the point. Just a note i drive my vehicle 2-3 times a week at most 75-100 miles when i do and i do not drive the car hard at all with me maybe pushing it when already at highway speeds sometimes... So with my experience i would not buy another BMW in general unless it is my secondary vehicle in warranty or out. Last edited by TRIUMPHT; 11-28-2017 at 01:45 PM.. |

I love my 2013 X5M but one thing I never considered when researching the car was gas mileage, I always drive it in M mode and i "get on it" often, so i average 12mpg, its a DD so it gets driven a lot, my gf did the math and monthly on the X5m I spend about $500+ a month on gas, we dont travel much or take long road-trips but I would guess if we did it would be a lot more.
so far, i haven't needed to do much maintenance, I've done little things myself like replace all the vacuum lines, vent hose that goes above\runs across the turbos, new battery, my friend coded\registered it to my car (bmw charges $250+ to code a new battery). I have to replace the rear break pads now but those dont cost much and I can do the work myself. my other car is a pump gas 600whp 335i, so I had high whp hopes for the x5m, i only wish the e70 s63 engine was capable of the same big numbers the S63tu puts out after modding and tuning. After Christmas I am going to look to trade it in for an M5, more tuner support for the s63tu.

Lexus RX is a Toyota Highlander which is based on the Camry platform If you have to ask, then a BMW may not be for you. Buying a European performance brand is not usually a sensible thing. You buy a BMW for the drive. The Japanese build a fine appliance, but why pay 20k more for a Lexus when a Highlander is the same thing? Mediocrity at its finest. Same old V6 and slushbox transaxle they have had in every chassis for over 20 years. Same old technology replicated from the Europeans and Americans. They have a hell of a marketing machine though. |

Me more careful than I was when buying one! I seem to have water everywhere, corroded plugs and computers in the stupidest places. I thought "gee, only one thing's wrong", but it escalated!

Well, I bought my wife a CPO Lexus RX 350. Withing three months it turned out to be the biggest lemon I have ever seen. I may be the only person that has ever had a lemon Lexus but boy did I get one. Dealer took it back it was so bad. I bought her a Limited Explorer and she loves it. Won't let me get her anything else.
I love my 07 X5 though. Absolute beast and fun to drive around but it is not nearly as lux as the explorer. |

You'll find horror stories about any brand on that brand's forum. People post their problems.
90,000 miles on my X5 and maybe $1500 in not warrantied or recall repairs.

In the mid 90K mile range with my own and I've had VERY little issues. Probably around the same cost as mentioned above or a bit less. I personally feel it's about how you MAINTAIN the vehicle you own. At times it's out of your control but majority of the time it isn't

I've had my X5M for about two years now. I got it with 29K miles and now I'm sitting on 44K miles with 0 issues. I do have a warranty, but consider that I've driven it about 15K miles with out any problems. This is the longest I've ever owned a "performance" can and I love it. The only issue that was mentioned is the gas mileage, it's atrocious. With that said, my best friend just got a MBZ ml350 for his wife. He called me concerned that there was something wrong with the gas mileage at 12mpg+- city. I get 8-12city depending on how I'm driving so the point is that all older models will suffer from less than advertised mpg. |

OP, it sounds like Lexus RX is what you want (perhaps a hybrid, too?).
It would check all the boxes, including reliability. To own a used BMW requires having patience and money to put up with its lower reliability. They are simply less reliable than Lexus & Co. |
