Dinan Stg 2 tune on my 2013 X5 50i
Well, i'm sure everyone is familiar with the issues i had early on with my 2013 X5 50i. Have had no issues since the new motor and alt. I have right at 5500 mi on the new motor. It has been running good but i really did not like the hesitation or "lull" when leaving from a stop from an idle. Also wanted more hp...
So, i pulled the trigger on the sale Dinan has on their Stg 2 tune. Made the 4hr drive Friday to Classic BMW of Plano to have them install it. They did the air bag recall while it was there. Well, wouldn't you know that it would not go smoothly....lol Had been there for 2hrs and BMW rep came to tell me ..."we have a problem with your car"....my heart stopped! Turns out, the the DME "locked" during the software upload. Dinan can unlock it but Dinan was closed Friday(holiday i guess)! My vehicle is dead in the water until they can get with Dinan on Monday. Geesh....i'm thinking things are never gonna end for me and this X5! They give me a loaner and i head home....4hrs away. Now for the good news! I got a call today at 12:45pm and was told that someone with Dinan came into work today and wanted to help Classic BMW get my vehicle up and running. Took them a few minutes and they were back in binnis! Took me 10min and i was on my way back to Plano. Made it there in record time... From research i've done on the Dinan Stg 2 tune, i was expecting better off idle response and a very noticeable difference in acceleration. Was hoping to get close to the same mpg under normal driving conditions too, but was expecting it to be a little worse. When leaving the dealership i didn't really notice much of a difference when leaving from a stop, but i was being easy since it was not up to temp. Of course i was not paying attention and was in the wrong lane to take my exit off the N Dallas Tollway! So i went North a bit till i could get turned around. Had to yield to a good deal of traffic to get onto the frontage road heading south. Saw a small opening and i hammered it....! Very noticeable difference! It actually had a little wheelspin as it got going. Was pleasantly surprised. Had the "opportunity" several more times on my 4hr drive back to get into the throttle a good bit and it continued to impress. Did it gain 95hp? I dunno, but it def picked up a good deal of that for sure. After putting almost 300mi on it, i have noticed its much better off idle leaving from a stop. The biggest surprise is the GAIN in mpg. I normally get 20.0-20.5mph on my trip back from my sisters in Burleson, Tx in the X5. This time, i averaged 21.7mpg. I reset the comp from the same gas station as i do when coming from my sisters. Could be that it was a little less windy in my direction, but i'll take it as a gain until proven otherwise... Just wanted to give my initial impressions with the Dinan Stg 2 tune. Would i do it again? In a heartbeat.

My heart sunk in your third paragraph lol...I'm glad it turned out well after all. You can also look at stacking the Dinan with JB4 if you're brave...if anything the throttle will improve on map one. Maybe a sprint booster otherwise? It's still a FI car so you will need to stay in the power band to get boost/acceleration.

I thought Berger JB4 was done supporting tuning with the 50's?
My traction control limits my boost in first when I give mine the go pedal.

I thought the Stage 1 was the one that adds 95hp? That's the one that was on sale for $942 or so?
Or did I misread it? So what about the TORQUE??

I can def say that after having 400ish mi on it now that its getting even better. The throttle response down low and mildly accelerating is getting better.

sounds like you need a trip to the dyno.
Is the Dinan handheld that loads a tune in the engine module?

I will get it dyno'd when I get a chance. Gotta find one that's not 4hrs away.
I believe the Dinan tune is a re flash of the factory ECU. There is no handheld unit |

Ok, I feel like you may be right. It's why the price was a bit higher then others

Glad to hear it went well. I just got a '14 X6 5.0. I was trying to decide between the ess (995.00) dinan (926.09) and dme (1499.00). I was leaning toward dinan because I can get it done and maintained at BMW. Coming from and E60 I feel like this is all new to me so I guess I'm playing it safe. Dinan may not be the best but I haven't heard of a negative issue yet. Enjoy.
