Extended Warranty - 2012 X5 SAV
I have a beautiful 2012 X5 SAV, never has given me any trouble, I treat it like the jewel it is. It now has 40k miles and I plan to keep it for a few more years, not only because I love it but also because I think it's looks are 10x better than the current X5. My question is this: I have been contacted by BMW about purchasing extended warranty and would like to know if others in the forum have had experience with this. I am also wondering if the cost can be negotiated a bit. Cheers.

The cost from BMW AFAIK can be negotiated a bit, but not a whole lot. It is my opinion that extended warranty plans from BMW are grossly overpriced.
Have you considered after market warranties such as Route66? That's my first choice when my factory warranty expires in a few months. Link to a thread I made in the other forum a few weeks ago: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho....php?p=8777532 |

5.0-May be worth it. 3.5i-Total rip off. I'm keeping my money in the bank.

Note though that a key read is required which makes it a bit difficult to extend your reach. You can get the MSRP of each plan and duration off the DCS report. If you're friendly with your service advisor, they should give you a copy. EDIT: Agree on the 3.5. Not worth the money. 5.0 however is a completely different story. |

The cost per year for the 72month/100k warranty on my 35i is less than my cell phone contract per year. I can't say it was a rip-off. Perhaps upfront the cost sucks. but broken down per year though, or per month, it's nothing.

Personally, I wouldn't own one without a warranty. Then again, I'm also keeping it until I hit 100K miles or when it runs out of CPO warranty. I have too many toys (options) on mine that could break. Recently the sunroof rails needed to be replaced. Very expensive. I cannot imagine the cost of the massaging seats breaking. Oof!

I just had my 6th dealer visit in 10 months lol. This time they had to replace a failed intake air temp sensor/maf sensor module. The cpo is nice, its a $50 deductible. If you are planning on keeping the car until 100k and can get a reasonable cost for the warranty i'm sure it will pay for itself.

A warranty on the other hand, especially a BMW extended warranty, may be used occasionally, if and when ... The question that needs to be asked is: where does the use of your dollars have better value over time? In your (investment) account or in BMW's hands? Financing a extended warranty is no even worth a discussion ...

Watch this space: My (short-term) longitudinal experiment has begun, since my warranty expired in November (2011 3.5i, 48k mi). I hope to report back: Out-of-pocket expenses, $3900 in the bank vs. what would have been covered with a 2-yr. (72 mo.)/70k miles total, $3900 extended warranty (quoted by Patrick BMW 9/14).

Looks like miles is the important factor for you ... not time? Will you do the routine maintenance stuff yourself?

Actually, it's the opposite. I do appx. 8k miles per year, which is why I think the two years will fly by and my hypothesis won't be refuted (fingers crossed). I'll DIY the simple stuff, like oil/oil filter/cabin & air filters/brakes- maintenance stuff not covered by the extended warranty anyway- as well as OBD II-diagnosables. The stuff requiring a lift will go to my (relatively) trusty Indy. I'll buy all parts myself.
